I want to confirm what CarbonMac said above. I just updated to 10.8.1 and today I have the exact SAME problem. My MBP would not let me log in, it's stuck with the SBBOD at the login screen. Sometimes it lets me in, but then it freezes right away. However, I can log in in Safe Boot. So I'm currently backing up my files via time machine.
I have tried just about everything that I found online regarding to SBBOD. Nothing worked. I even reinstall my OSX.
I do have SSD, Crucial M4 to be exact. I updated its firmware because I read somewhere that it has been a cause for some SBBOD, but that did not work either.
I'm currently abroad overseas, and I am out of idea. Any help? I do have my original HDD with me, I might have to switch back for the time being.

After upgrading to 10.8.2 I became a member of this special club. Has rendered my MBP practically useless. Can't leave my track pad alone for more then 40 seconds before it freezes or my keyboard gets a mind of its own.
Apple next time you do an update make sure you check it out at all machines.
Thanks for the advice of getting the graphics card checked. Hopefully it works.

I went back to apple store and they replaced the logic board (motherboard) and it has not crashed again. I have mid 2012 MacBook Pro 2.6Ghz non retina. I think its also a known issue.

Have the same problem here. MBP i7 2.7, 16gb ram, original hd. OS 10.8.2.
I did something that helped me a lot and thought i shared it with you. I noticed that after a freeze my desktop icons had no preview image, just the files and the type.
I did a backup to an external hard disk to both my desktop files and my files in documents and video folders. So MBP is almost empty (apart from FCPx files). Also deleted any apps i did not use and had download for fun. Desktop has no files. Did a repair disc permissions.
NO FREEZES since.
So I'm guessing that it might be a FINDER issue.
Hope this helps someone.

Same problem here.
Everything was working very well until the install of a Crucial 240 Gb SSD. Now after some period on sleep (or with no activity) the computer freezes. No spinwheel, only freezes and I need to turn off and turn on to use it again.
Does anyone know if theres a firmware update to solve it?

My share of problems are beginning to resurface! After the firmware update it worked fine for a while. Now when I use it, it continues to work fine untill i reboot! Thats when it will show a gray progress bar which would halt abruptly shutting down the machine. No go form there on. Running disk utility from an installer disk would reveal that the drive has gone corrupt. Verify Disk would report some kind of a problem that can only be solved my formatting the drive and restoring it from a tm backup. the repair option fails to repair the drive.

I think most folks on this forum would be amazed at how well Snow Leopard works if they were to reinstall clean with 10.6. Lion was flaky and ML is crap, they never even fixed Lion before releasing ML. You lose iCloud integration with SL (I can live without it) and some of the bells and whistles but man is it ever fast and stable, try it and you will see how OSX is meant to be. I rolled back to it off of ML months ago and it hasnt spun or froze or even glitched even once.

Well guys, my problem was solved. Unfortunately it was a hard disk issue. It finally crashed permanently. Put an ssd in and now everything works like a charm for about a week now...
