It was still £55, which is a **** sight more than a battery for my Samsung Galaxy S2 would cost. At least it meant I could sell the phone on and get something back.
My advice to anyone who can would be to make an appointment at the genius bar, they seem to find it harder to say no to people face to face! That obviously isn't an option for everyone though.
The whole thing has put me off unibody phones, I was looking at an HTC one x+ next but I think I might stick with Samsung, at least if the battery expands, the flimsy back will just pop off.

I just went to an Apple store and they would replace it for $79. (cost of a battery)
Apple has just lost me as a customer, I have spent a lot of money on Apple products in the past few years for myself and my company, I cannot invest that kind of money into a company if their products 'self destruct' after 2 years.
This is not a one time things, there are thousands of reports of this happening, it is an obvious defect in their product.

Take them up on it. No disrespect intended, but what the he double-hockysticks did you expect? By your admission, you have a 2-3 year old phone, WELL outside of warranty, including any extended warranty. They are not obligated to give you anything but they are willing to give you a new (well, probably a referbished) iPhone for the cost of a battery. Sounds like a pretty decent deal to me. But not for a self-entitled ingrate. But you have a resolution, it's your choice, take the offer and move on or continue to chew on your sour grapes.

This is an obvious defect in the hardware, this is not just normal wear and tear.
Apple has had recalled a number of their products because of battery issues and this should be another one.

There is a difference in product warranty and and a design/manufacturing defect that leads to dangerous/gurantee failure of a product. A perfect example to this is a recall on your car. The manufacture WILL recall your car if they found such a defect that will lead to certain failure. **** Audi even recalled my car after 8 years for a ignition coil issue. Why do you defend Apple like a fan boy? This is clearly something Apple has to own up to.

Agree totally with bryanfrombc. This is an issue of consumer protection. For instance, what do I do with my puffed up 2.7-year-old iPhone? Apple won't take it back or fix it for less than $170 plus 12% tax. So it sits in my house. Is it a fire hazard? I don't really want to get rid of it, just in case Apple changes their policy and DOES issue a recall. So this is a consumer safety issue.
This is a very important thread and I wish it was echoed someplace more popular where people could pay attention and do something about it.

Same boat here. Went to use is and the screen was cracked. I ordered a replacement screen and when I started to remove the old one, the case popped. The replacement screen was cracked in shipping so I spent a month getting the return and the replacement for the replacement screen. When I got to the task of actually installing the new screen, the back had popped out and the system bord is bent. Built in obsolence is one thing but this???

I am absolutely appalled by my experience with Apple customer service.
I took my phone today with exploded batteries to 100 Greyrock Place. Stamford, CT. At first, they made me to make an appointment in an hour. When I came back, they made me wait for another 20 min in order to tell me that there is nothing they can and suggested to replace a phone for $149.
Since it was the most expensive phone on the market when I’ve bought it, I don’t think I felt disrespected more. They are selling me a phone for a full price on my request to fix defective phone? I had it only for two and half years and I understand the concept of expired warranty. The apple employee pointed out, that it is not any different than dead motor in the car. Well, excuse me, I don’t need to buy the whole new car with dead motor, but only to replace a dead motor.
It took me many years to buy the iPhone and this experience left an unbelievable bad taste. As you can guess, I will never buy another product from this company. This is a very dishonest and very greedy business. I have no respect for anybody who works for Apple going forward.
I will file complain reports with various agencies

To update this thread from my previous message :
I called apple customers the same day and got my new new 3GS for 6000 yens factured as battery replacement 2 weeks after the incident....
Becareful to always remove the cheap from your device before to send it back to Apple (they pay all fees for package cost) because then won't send you back the cheap.
Also very careful when you open the device because the battery will expand like an Airbag (a shock) and things will fly away when removing the small screws.... For my case screws slots got broken then impossible to remove the cheap. Then I pushed like crazy on the entire structure to success to remove the cheap from the slot.
Cheap is important if you want to start your new device.
