trying to save custom template

I am trying to save a Pages custom template in My Templates folder so that it shows up in the template chooser.


I know that they are supposed to be saved in users/library/...../My Templates but when selecting Save As Template from the File menu in Pages I am not given My Templates as an option - just a regular Finder window with no way to get to my Library.


Is something messed up? The only way I can get a template to the right folder is to manually dig down many layers to the folder and then drag the .template file in.

    If that "regular Finder window" you get isn't already pointed at "My Templates," it might be helpful if you told us where it is pointed.

    Still just guessing at what your issue is, DP. The way the app works for most of us is that we click the menu item I circled and submit a name for the template, then click the Save button.


    No folder digging required. Have you done anything with where things are stored on your file system?

    At this point we need to ask you to try Save as a Template... in another User Account. If it works in a different user account, that means you have a corrupted file in your regular account.

    Your first screenshot was plenty clear, but there is an additional problem with it.


    When I select Save as Template… with an Untitled document, the Save sheet that comes up has the filename set to Untitled.template, with "Untitled" highlighted for me to type a name into it. Your screenshot has an Untitled document, but the Save sheet shows a filename of Test.template, with no highlighting. I have to think that you have already made changes to the dialog, and the screenshot does not show what first came up when you selected Save as Template… If you typed a name, you might have clicked on your Home folder in the sidebar, too.


    Taking your (implied) word that you didn't change the dialog from My Templates to your home folder, Jerry's suggestion of trying a different user is a good one, although I would expect the save location to be coded within the application package, not in a user preference.


    If it behaves the same for another user, one way to work around the problem would be to navigate in a Finder window to users/Rob/Library/Application Support/iWork/Pages/Templates/My Templates and drag an alias of that folder to the sidebar, so that you can get there in a Save As… dialog.

    Don't reinstall Pages. That it works in another user account shows that the problem lies in your account, usually corrupt preferences, & reinstalling does not touch those. Go to your user library > Preferences & delete the file & then restart Pages.
