I'm between a rock and a hard place, in a perfect storm of failed TM backups

I installed 10.8.2 on my 24" iMac (2007 era) when the notification popped up but when it restarted, after a few minutes of the faint question mark, I got the panel offering a choice between reinstalling from Time Machine, reinstalling the OS, running disk utility, and using Safari to trouble-shoot. 


If I select the Time Machine option, I can see all the Time Machine backups but they are grayed out and ultimately unselectable.


If I run the Disk Utility, both the verify and repair selections run on the internal 500Gb hard drive successfully.  The verify runs successfully on the Le Cie, but not the repair selection  -  it doesn't seem to end, appears to fail.  


When I chose to reinstall the OS, I get a message reporting that my installation is being veryified but then a non-descript error message occurs indicating I can't complete to installation.


Safari seems to work fine.    I am hoping someone has a suggestion other than starting over.

    I don't understand your response. You do, or do not, get that message? If you do, exactly when do you get it?

    That's only a verification of the partition map, not the boot volume. Select the volume icon ("Macintosh HD," unless you gave it a different name) and then Repair Disk.

    You cannot repair the volume from which you booted your Mac.


    Boot OS X Recovery then select Disk Utility from the Mac OS X Utilities screen.

    To clarify the present situation, you installed or upgraded OS X on the internal drive, but were unable to reboot as usual. Instead, you booted in Recovery mode. You have no backups from after the upgrade, but you do have pre-upgrade snapshots in Time Machine. When you select Restore from Time Machine in the OS X Utilities screen, the snapshots are grayed out. Is all that correct?


    If it is, reboot and hold down the option key at the startup chime. See whether you can select your usual boot volume.

    There's a problem with the internal drive. It may be failing. I suggest you erase the boot volume in Recovery and then try again to install. If successful, transfer your data from Time Machine when prompted. If unsuccessful, you have a hardware fault and will need to take the machine in for service or replace it.

    I want to add that if you have the slightest doubt about the integrity of your backups, you should do nothing else until you have backed up to another external drive. You can do that by following the instructions linked here:

    I was also able to repair the original internal HD and am wondering if I should have any confidence in it?
