Q: Photo's missing after back-up from TM

I've recently had to reinstall my hard drive from time machine and have found that a number of photo's are missing in iPhoto.

I had spent a considerable amount of time creating new albums from newly scanned and edited images which are missing. The most recent albums are on my ipad and iphone as I had backed-up to time machine the night before and updated my ipad and iphone, but for some reason my MBP is not properly updated.

I'm sure that I've reinstalled my MBP from the correct version in time machine.

Any suggestions are appreciated.

cheers

Try selecting the pictures folder in your user account and then entering Time Machine. Selecting the folder should take you to the correct folder in Time Machine, where you can see if there are other pictures there.

Thanks for your response Eric Root.

I've found the photo's section in Time Machine, but the more recent photo's that I scanned (circa 1,000 of them)  don't appear to be in there. These newly scanned one's are on my iPhone and iPad, so I'm not imagining it.

Do you have any other ideas?

    Thanks again for your assistance.

    cheers

You are welcome for the assistance. I just hope this can be resolved. Computer frustration isn't high on my list of fun things to do.

The way my wife transfers photos is via Photo Stream which can be selected in System Preferences/iCloud. You need to set that up on the computer and in Settings on the IOS devices.

In iTunes, if you hook up your IOS device and then select it, there is an option to sync Photos on the far right. When my wife hooks her IOS device to her computer, iPhoto automatically opens and imports the photos.

Also in iTunes, if you go to the Apps button at the top (third from left) and scroll down it shows applications which can transfer data to the computer. iPhoto should be listed there. If you click the Add button, you can copy items from your computer to your devices. If the sync is working properly, this shouldn't be necessary.

    Thanks again Eric.

Re Cloud / photo stream: I've tried to set-up cloud / photo stream, but I'm unsure if this is possible using iPhoto 9, or if this would work. Under System Preferences / iCloud, I'm unable to tick photo stream even though it shows up, albeit faded.

Re iTunes: If I understand your suggestion properly, this option is only available for photo's in the camera roll. The photo's I'm trying to move from my iPod to MBP are in the photo / album section of the iPod which doesn't show up as an option.

Re iTune apps: I found SimpTransfer and have given it a go, but feel there might be a better way.

Also, I've tried opening iPhoto with command / option pressed, but I think this wasn't reading the iPod, rather it was going through iPhoto only. As a back-up plan, I'm transferring photo's from the iPad to DropBox, but this is slow going and the dates / labels don't transfer across (I had dated and labled most of these images and am hoping this will transfer across from the iPod to MBP.

thanks again in advance for any further advice.

    cheers

I think for the photo stream to work, you need to have the photos in iPhoto on the IOS device as you noted. Here are two Apple articles that cover Photo Stream. The first one lists the requirements:

    http://support.apple.com/kb/HT4486

    http://support.apple.com/kb/HT4906?viewlocale=en_US&locale=en_US

I will try to get back with you. My wife is out somewhere and has taken her iPad mini with her, so I can't experiment hands on right now.

There is an app in the iTunes Store called Airdrive HD and there is an iPhone version. It is a free app. You can import your photos into the app from Photos and when you hook the iPod up to iTunes, if you select the Apps button, Airdrive will show up in the file sharing section at the boittom of the page. You can then select the photos and save them to the computer or at least I could.

Supposedly, you can hook directly to Airdrive via a web browser, but I never figured out how to do that.

Rattling around in the back of my head is I think there is a way to hook an iPhone/iPod/iPad to the computer so it acts like a hard drive. I forgot how though - a new challenge.

This looks even easier. I think you can do it in one step:

    http://www.wideanglesoftware.com/touchcopy/index.php

You only get 100 copies with the trail version. The full version is $29.99.
