PalmerMac Level 1 Level 1 (0 points)

Coloured screen blotches or smudges have started to appear on my iMac screen (2007 model).  These increase when moving certain windows around on the screen.  Close the moving window and the additional smudging created goes away.  The smudges are different colours depending on the colour of the image behind the smudge.  This is not the grey smudging that many others have complained of in these forums.   I have no technical background, but would seem to me that this is not a hardware screen problem given the inconsistency of where the smudges are located, but a software or graphics card problem.  Hard to explain so have attached two screen shots: 1. normal state smudges, two lines of four boxes equally spread across the screen; and 2. multiplying smudges that sometimes occur when moving a window around behind the smudges.

Any and all guidance on fixing this problem appreciated.

Thanks

    Hello PalmerMac,

Yours is one of many such reports.   Sadly because you are now out of both warranty and Apple Care (should you have had it), the cost of clearing it up will fall upon you.

Whatever else you may hear, unless you are truly competent, do not buy a glass screen and try to fit it yourself.  Have the job done properly by an Apple retail store, or a premium re-seller.

Here is a link to a typical report ... Greyish Smudge marks behind the glass...: Apple Support Communities ...

Just look at the number of posts ... 940 and counting.

    Hi seventy one

As mentioned, this is not the grey smudging problem that others are having, my smudges are coloured, they change colour depending on the colour of the image behind them, and can appear anywhere on the screen when moving a window around.  Do not believe therefore that this is a problem that changing the screen glass will solve.

I assume there is no dampness in the room or in the immediate vicinity, but all the same, have you felt around the areas where this occurs.   As you know, some parts of a mac get hotter than others, in particular the top and left hand corners.

    Just a thought.

No moisture and no particular hot spots.  Note the smudges can occur anywhere on the screen, not the same place every time.  And they are not smudges where all pixels in the smudge are coloured, they are three lines of pixels on top of each other that are discoloured (gaps in between) and together they make a box, then four boxes arranged in a group, like this.  That grouping I am calling a smudge.

Don't think I can add to this except to say I have recently seen several references to 'pixilated' screens.    So I typed in 'pixilated screen' in the search box and a whole page of references came up.   Might be worth you taking a look.

    Good hunting.
