If you are synching between the two devices using iCloud, the Contacts apps will contain the same data. But there isn't really any way to see the Contacts list on your Mac with the iPad.
What exactly are you trying to do?

IMac address book holds the phone numbers of our friends. Being oldfashioned these are not held in a phone memory. When I am on the iMac my partner wants to look up phone numbers on the ipad in a different room.
I am a bit wary of icloud, perhaps someone hacking into it would have secret access to my passwords? But would consider it if it would work. I suspect that it is not actually possible to see address book on ipad. Any advice very gratefully received.....Andrew

iCloud is no more or less secure than most online based services (in fact maybe more so than many). I've been using for quite sometime with no problems. Partucularlky with the Contacts lists which I share between an MBP, iPad and iPhone. Short of using it to synchronize those contacts lists, I don't know of any way to view the content of the iPad from another device.
You can read a bit more about iCloud here: http://www.apple.com/support/icloud/
It does require that the devices you wish to synch with are all using the same AppleID for the general Mail,Contacts,Calendar function, but you can choose wich services you wish to synch (just Contacts for example).

Dear James....OK, accept what you say about icloud security. Maybe I am being stupid ----- I have no problem seeing the email contacts for a new email message. But I am not seeing the imac address book with the phone numbers and street addresses. .....Andrew

When you first set up iCloud to synch the contacts lists, it take a little while for it fully sych.
