Yahoo! email not pushing

    It looks like yahoo has no idea when they will fix this. I am now seriously considering switching to gmail. I have used this acct for 10 years. Problems started happening this past year. Yahoo mail has been down to many times this past year. The link below shows that just in the past 24 hrs it has been down continously...

    Update*- I woke up this morning to find that I was missing about 50 contacts from my iPhone (which I sync using Yahoo). This prompted me to check to see if maybe this was because Yahoo was doing some work on their end to fix their issues. I've been fetching my email for the last couple of weeks because push wasn't working, so I switched back to push and it is infact, working. BUT, only on my iPhone, not my iPad.

     

    I've been checking regularly on both devices and so far that's the only good news. My contacts are all present on the actual Yahoo website but they are going haywire on my idevices (currently I'm missing about 50 on my iPhone and about 70 on my iPad). 

     

    Anyone else??

    Hi

     

    So I have something you all might want to try if you are having an issue adding the yahoo mail account on an iphone/ ipad / ipod.

     

    In the app store download the yahoo mail app for iphone (it works on ipads and ipods as well.. but there's only an iphone version).  After downloading it - open and sign in.  It's likely it will say that your yahoo account is 'locked' due to suspicious activity - follow the prompts to unlock it.

     

    Now add the yahoo account under the ipad mail settings.

     

    It should work in the regular ipad, iphone, ipod mail application now.

    What a joke! I've received that response from yahoo several times yet they've never followed up.  I'm currently migrating to another provider.

    at least I can get my mail now using the yahoo iphone app--but I still can't add the yahoo mail account.

    Push still isn't working for me.  Other than the 8 hours last week, where it worked on both my iPad and iPhone until I rebooted them, it hasn't worked since mid-December.  They are good at responding to emails, but the emails don't give me much hope that the problem will be fixed.

    Currently I'm using the iOS app.  Push also breaks for that if the iPhone is rebooted, but logging out and back in gets the app push working.  I'm also still forwarding mail to iCloud.

    I made the change to icloud today. Took me a few hours to inform everyone and to change most of my email subscriptions but I'm very happy to have push (not to mention contacts and everything else) working seemlessly.

    I realize it might be much harder for others who are very deeply embedded in the Yahoo! ecosystem. However I've been with Yahoo! since 2002 and for me it didn't take too long to migrate.

    I plan to keep moving whatever I've missed over to icloud as the days pass and I'm hopeful I won't have to deal with flakey email issues anymore... More important things to do..

    The issue I'm having is that I have 2 yahoo accounts on my ipod ... one of them is working just fine, the other is not working at all.  My main yahoo account which is not working made me change my password.  I have a pretty strong password so Im not sure why I had to change it since I was not told it was hacked.  With this change, I cannot connect on my iPhone.  I deleted this account, recreated it and still nothing.  So, is this a Yahoo issue?  Should i be contacting them?  Is this just a wait and see issue?  THanks!

    Don't know how long it will last, but push started working on my iPhone by itself and on my iPad after turning push off and on.  Ironically it started working a few hours after the iOS app stopped pushing mail.

     

    Last time it started working, it broke again within 12 hours.  I'm going to try not turning off my devices as that broke it last time., but I expect it will stop working again within a day or two.

    Well Yahoo decided to screw me over more than usual.  Technically "push" is still working as my iPhone and iPad are still checking for mail when new mail arrives, but now at least 90% of the time the new mail simply won't download.  It will say "downloading 1 of x" and the progress bar will appear and then immediately disappear with no mail downloaded.  Occasionally it will work, but most of the time it won't. 

     

    Deletions work (either on the web site or in the app) as does flagging or marking existing messages unread/read, but new mail won't download.

     

    The problem appears to be with some of Yahoo's IMAP servers.  When the iOS Mail app goes to grab mail, it connects to apple.imap.mail.yahoo.com which randomly returns one of the following ip addresses:  66.218.74.63, 98.139.244.126, 98.138.24.48, 98.139.172.225, 98.138.215.4, 98.138.24.49, 98.138.31.75 or 98.139.212.64.  From my testing the following normally work:  98.139.212.64 and 98.139.172.225.  The following never work: 98.138.24.48 and 98.138.215.4.  The following sometimes work and sometimes don't:  66.218.74.63 and 98.139.244.126.  I didn't get a chance to test the others.

     

    The problem is that once the download fails, checking for mail again won't try to download again unless there's a change to the folder (new message, deleted message, flag/unread status change).  So once it fails, it won't try again until there's a mailbox change at which point it can simply fail again.  I can force a change by flagging a message and checking again, but it can still fail to download after checking.

     

    Also the iPhone and iPad tend to stick with the same server for a period of time so once it picks a bad server, it gets stuck on it.  As such mail simply won't download at least 90% of the time.  Worse still, I have no idea there's any missing mail since going into the Mail app and checking manually shows no new mail.   The only way I can tell is to go to http://mail.yahoo.com in Safari.  That's really, really annoying.

     

    I've seen this problem in the past.  Sometimes it fixes itself in a few hours.  Other times it takes days or weeks.  Since the problem started about 3 hours ago, it looks like it might be the later before it's fixed.

    Yahoo finally got my e-mail working and pushing.

    One of the things they told me to do was as follows and this (althought it doesn't seem like it should do anything) was what they told me to do.

     

    Based on interaction with loyal users such as you, we have found what we believe to be the root cause of the "server unavailable" error message.

    When adding a Yahoo! account on the phone and filling in one's name, email address, password and description, the phone automatically fills in the description as Yahoo! Then the user presses the done key and it tries to verify and fails, giving the user a "server unavailable" message.

    Please try changing  the description from Yahoo! to your email address; it should then verify without further error.

     

    first I changed it to my whole e-mail address including the yahoo.com at the end.  This didn't work but then I changed it to just the first part (beforethe  @yahoo.com) and behold things started working;  I also had to send them a copy of the timeout error I was receiving when I logged into my desktop which was also working only intermitently.   I hope this helps some of you.

    Yahoo "performed maintenance" on my account and made things worse.  They basically reset IMAP for me.  This caused the UID for all the messages on the server to change forcing all IMAP clients to redownload everything.

     

    The server problems are still happening, though not as bad as before.  Mail is only failing to download about 5 to 10% of the time instead of 95% of the time.  As such, I'd say 1 out of every 10 emails is not downloading to my iPad or iPhone.

     

    The problem now, though is that I use Mozilla Thunderbird to download email to my PC via IMAP.  Because the moron Yahoo support guy needlessly reset my IMAP account, Thunderbird is downloading all my previously download emails (about 760 MB's worth of emails).  Of course since the server problems aren't fixed, it's periodically failing to download emails.   I think Thunderbird is smart enough to try again, unlike the iOS Mail app, but it's still taking a very long time.

     

    Oh and it's constantly reporting the following error message:

     

    "The current operation on 'folder' did not succeed. The mail server for account user@yahoo.com responded: [UNAVAILABLE] UID FETCH Server error while fetching messages."

     

    where 'folder' is the folder that it's downloading emails from and user@yahoo.com is my Yahoo! email address.

     

    I really don't know what Yahoo's major malfuction is.  They went from having push mail problems, to basically having problems pushing and fetching email.  I wonder how long it will take to fix this problem.  Probably a long time, considering they haven't even acknowledged there is a problem.

    It seems to have reverted to normal.  I still have no idea why Yahoo has so many problems.  At the very least, they could put up a Yahoo server status page, like Apple does with iCloud.
