Running iP 8.1.2 - 09 on Snow Leopard on my iMac. I set up Mountain Lion with iP 11 on my MBPro, copied my current iP 09 library over to the MBP and imported it ( open iP 11, choose Import to Library... and double-click the 09 Library); it took a looooong time.

The iP library on SL says it has 1600+ images.

After importing to iP 11 with ML, iP 11 says it has 6000+, and:

  • It hasn't even brought over all the images from 09, and there are LOTS of duplicates.
  • I assume this has something to do with edits but I haven't made that many.
  • There are also some RAW/JPEG pairs in the 09 file.

But fundamentally, the migration does not appear to have worked at a number of levels.

Are these known issues? Did I screw up the migration?

Yes you screwed up the migration... and you did it right here:

copied my current iP 09 library over to the MBP and imported it ( open iP 11, choose Import to Library..

Never import one Library to another. Every version and thumbnail is imported like a distinct photo, you lose all your Albums, Keywords etc., the link between Original and Previews is destroyed, the non-destructive editing feature is ruined and so on. In summary: it's mess.

To move an iPhoto Library to a new machine:

Link the two Macs together: there are several ways to do this: Wireless Network,Firewire Target Disk Mode, Ethernet, or even just copy the Library to an external HD and then on to the new machine...

But however you do choose to link the two machines...

Simply copy the iPhoto Library from the Pictures Folder on the old Machine to the Pictures Folder on the new Machine.

    Then launch iPhoto. That's it.

This moves photos, events, albums, books, keywords, slideshows and everything else.
