the following is just a thought, it does not necessarily reflect reality:

what if whatsapp received some kind of bonus to exclude 3g users from their service?

this might simply be a strategic move to push mobile phone sales.

Your tin-foil hat is on a little bit too tight.  Whatsapp users constitute a pathetically small percentage of iPhone users.

While I think that Whatsapp is to blame, Apple can't just turn a blind eye here. Let me explain.

Apple takes 30% of the price we pay for each not free app available on the App Store, right? If they make money out of this, they are also liable. Maybe they are not 50% responsible, but you can't say they are not co-responsible.

Only software which is available on the App Store can be installed on our iPhones, unless we don't temper with them. If that's the only way users can have Apps installed on their devices, Apple should guarantee a certain set the rights for us. Remember that all the Apps have to go through a validation process, so what on the earth do they look into? whether or not they look pretty?

Come on, if I'm running a business, I decide what the rules should be. And in case the business becomes a monopoly (the App Store is the only place you can get software from), the rules become even more important.

In my humble opinion, Apple should have rejected any update which efectively represents that a service, which had been provided to users before, gets discontinued unless the company goes bankrupt and closes the service down.

In other words, if the version beyond 2.8.4 cannot work on iPhone 3G, then 2.8.5 and on should have been rejected.

I know that technology is exposed to obsolescence, but there is a huge difference between not deploying new features on a specific hardware because it can't handle them well (at least that's what you can say to tease users with newer things and make they consider an upgrade), and indirectly discontinuing a product.

As an example, if I had a white MacBook and all of the sudden I could not use Pages anymore because of a 2013 update, would it make any sense? it would not! Just leave me alone using my beloved 2008 version, even if I can't take advantage of something like Documents in the Cloud.

Not updating any peace of software because only 0.1% to 0.5% of the users uses a type of equiment I some how can agree. But I can't agree with that they discontinue te possibility for me to use the old version. Whatsapp has discontinued the access to the server with older versions of the App. And for me that is someting which in my opinion isn't customer friendly. However if we look at the product itself. In fact it is OLD and not compling with new needs of the customers. You can not use it on tablets, PC or Mac. The safety is not always the way it should. Maybe a new company should stand up and make someting the customers wants.

For me it is the same as a carbuilder which come to you after you used a car for 3 years and then say, keep the car but give back the key's and engine. You have someting which was working fine but the carbuilder this it will cost him to much effort to maintain the car... Not user friendly.

But anyhow, for me it is now working again. And maybe we help other people by explaining what we did to make Whatsapp work again. Because I read that more people where able to start working with Whatsapp again.

As stated before I only used the old initial code we used the firsttime we wanted to use Whatsapp. After 1 Jan. we didn't try using that account on an other iPhone/smartphone.

It's not Apple's job to police other companies. I don't even know that it would be legal for them to behave the way you suggest. At least not in the U.S. They are acting as a storefront. Like Amazon, or Walmart, or Best Buy or an other retailer you would like to name, only the products sold in that store are purely digital.

Yea, thats why Whatsapp is on the 1. place in the top 25 sold apps on the Appstore I guess...

Your arguments are without rhyme or reason...

Fact is that none of both companies follows the simple rules for customer satisfaction (which include information policy as well).

I really think the founder of WhatsApp (Jan Koum) is now laying on a beach of Hawaii and laughing at me who was so stupid to buy his product.

Because: why since Dec 29, 2012 he had not posted a new Blog on the www.whatsapp.com site?

No reaction at all after the complete shut down of Jan 2, 2013

Yes, I had to buy the Iphone 4S to run Whatsapp again.

While my girlfriend who has a Samsung i7500 (old as crap) is still running the Whatsapp.

Thanks, Apple! You are the best.

You didn't have to buy a new iPhone to run Whatsapp, you chose to buy a new iPhone because you wanted to run Whatsapp.

Why do you buy Apple again then?

The only way to teach them some manners would be by avoiding them...

let's just say that we had that million dollars in our accounts but some thiefs (a fruit and a greeting) stole it... are we entitled to retribution or retaliantion? I say we are

switch to android where whatsapp is free anyway and this should be punishment enough for both of the thiefs,

I don't know about any of you... but apple won't get any of my money in the future.
