Cannot back up to icloud

My new ipod Touch is telling me I cannot back up to iCloud without a verified email address and I have a verified email address which I've been using for years.

Don't understand this.  When I go to Settings it says Account not Verified and check your email address (which is the same one I have) for instructions to verify the account.  When I press "check email" there is a message from Apple telling me to reset my Apple ID Password.  I did this even though I didn't want to.

Don't know what else to to.

Any help?
