Thank you for your efforts. I understand ios6.2 will be released soon and it's supposed to address some router issues. Either way, I'll just keep my systems updated and hope for the best. I'm not spending any more time other than to try each new version and see if it works. FYI, we still have an iPad 1 that uses iOS 5.1. Home share consistently works great with both video and music files. On the other iOS devices, we use StreamToMe. Thank you again.
This worked for me. I've been having trouble with homesharing since updating my iPhone 4 to iOS 6 a couple weeks ago. When it would connect it only showed a small subset of my library.
I signed out my apple id from my iphone, quit the music app. Signed back in and started up music, homesharing now shows my entire library.
I have only done this once. So I can't comment yet as to whether this is a one time fix or if I will have to repeat it (I hope not).
This worked for me- Thanks- It just is kind of pathetic, that we, as users have to go through this stuff- Coming from a PC/IOS user... This information, or fixes like the one you have laid out are not easily accesibile- as simple as it is. Its just one of those methodical fixes, that you bypass in your mind, considering the aggrevation, and distraction of the problem itself. Nonetheless, your fix worked for me- Thanks again.
I just bought the latest and greatest IPAD with IOS6. It doesn't even look for a shared library. I called Apple support and got the same song and dance runaround about reboot machine, router, ipad, etc. I upgraded to ITunes 11, no effect. I can't believe it doesn't even look for a library. It isn't comforting to know that this has been going on since September.
My situation was this:
The two iPhones 4 with iOS 5 had no issues home-sharing my fairly large iTunes-Library hosted on a mac mini. After the upgrade to iOS 6 both iPhones took some minutes to connect to it, while the circle never filled up more than half. It became obvious that only a small part of the library was shown. When doing a search, the matching Titles show up without any name, album or artwork.
I've tried everything signing out/in but nothing really changed, except that it shows more content. iTunes 11 or iOS 6.0.1 did not help. Now I've tested it using a brand new iPhone 5 that had never seen my iTunes-Library before. It already has iOS 6.0.2 (not available for iPhone 4!?). The circle also does not fill up more than half, but at least it seems, that all titles show up and even search shows title-names an so on.
Maybe it's a caching issue or a problem only when upgrading to iOS 6.
This is annoying. I used to say: Yes I like Apple because they give me almost no trouble. Unfortunately I've had much trouble since Lion especially the Server Version. Screen-Sharing is unusable... and now even a useless iOS-Update breaks a functionality that was very important to me. There was a time, I was happy to install every update as soon as possible. Now I'm cautious.
To Mario and all the others.
After all the frustrations and trying all the suggested solutions, I am no nearer getting Home Sharing to work between my iPad 2 running iOS6 and either my iMac or Mac Mini both running Mountain Lion. The iMac and MacMini share between themselves but not to the iPad,
So....I just gave up and bought the StreamToMe app for the iPad and installed ServetToMe on both the iMac and MacMini and together they do what Home Sharing is supposed to do.
Not bothered with videos, so can't vouch for whether it works with them but with music files it's fine.
The half of my Library that is in the cloud I can play back using the Music app on the iPad, the for rest I use StreamToMe to retrieve from the iMac. Since a third party developer can get it to work, it seems perverse that Apple can't....or won't.
A week ago all of my iphones ipads started to behave. The week ago I started making my itunes collection library (never used t before) since I can stream to apple tv, Pioneer AV receiver 2021 VSX...
suddenly, I get semi drops or partial lists from ipads and iphone 4s, but my iphone 4 managed to log out of home sharing for music and videos and I can't get it to log on again, no matter who or what I torture to do it..
Simple: can not connect to home sharing.
PS I realised it can't connect to app store too...3g or other people's wifi works good.
No, its not the router....
Still (Januar 10th 2013) have the same issue with home sharing and iphone (4) and ipad (2).
My Apple TV works properly, but the iphone and ipad find and connect to the shared itunes database and then show wrong covers, don´t play at all or crash after a few songs...
I don´t understand why
a) I cannot find an "official" response on this
b) why I would have to buy an additional app (stream to me) for something that should work as it is...
This is exactly my situation. When attempting access a large (78k songs) library, via either the iPad or iPhone, the loading indicator proceeds to exactly halfway and then hangs with no further progress or error messages (I have let the device attempt to load for at least twenty minutes). In the one or two ultra-rare situations where the library does load, it is unusably slow, and if you ever leave the Music app and return to it, the entire load process begins again.
Apple TV works fine using shared library. Remote app for iPad and iPhone works great accesing the shared computer.
Apples lack of acknowledgement is par for the course, but nonetheless disappointing. This was heralded as a key feature, but it is not usable in its current implementation.
My library is not quite as big (16.000 songs, 80gb).
I thought about splitting it up in several parts (used often, used rarely) but who knows how big the library may be so that the streaming works properly...
Strange that on the Apple TV (2) it works without problems (same wifi, same library).
It feels so stupid to have to turn my TV on just to listen to songs (and for browsing using the remote on the same iPad that cannot properly play the same music in the same network...)
I guess Apple is just not there yet... :-(
