Does it say something like: 'Contents not Available. Cannot read the connected storage media'? If so, then your camera is not using a directory structure that the iPad recognises. It appears that iPad simply looks for a 'DCIM' or similar folder on the SD card and only looks in there for photos.

What type of SD card - SD, SDHC, SDXC? SDXC cards won't work.
What capacity? Doesn't work with 64GB size.
How is the card formatted - needs to be FAT32.

I have the same problem.
The answer is that the iPad dont read cards that are formated to exFat.
If you format the card to NTFS or FAT32 the go pro wont read it
I hope to find out how to get around it.

I have an iPad 4 and Hero 3 Black edition.
I reformatted my Sandisk MicroSD 64GB to FAT32 using Easeus Partition Master (Selected 32KB cluster size)
I mainly using for diving so long video lengths is not an issue (i.e. 4gb file limits etc..).
Anyway iPad recognizes it. Gopro Hero works fine... All good.
Haven't hit any issues as yet.

I have a GoPro 3 camera and had the same problem reading my 64GB card with the iPod MicroSD card reader. Got the same error message: "Contents not Available. Cannot read the connected storage media". I used this program: http://www.ridgecrop.demon.co.uk/guiformat.exe and reformated the card using the default settings (FAT32, 32KB cluster size, quick format) on a PC. More info here: http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1773735.
The camera still recognizes the card and it now also works perfectly with the iPod!
Thanks for the tip!
