Q: MacBook Pro Retina display burn-in?

I first noticed this after my MBP [Retina] had gone to sleep, but: when returning to the login screen (since I have it set to require a password whenever the computer is idle long enough) I noticed what appeared to a very faint ghosting primarily noticeable on darker backgrounds.

After messing around with it a bit, there seems to be a fairly consistent in-display ghosting that occurs without much time at all; I was able to leave my screen on (a little above half-brightness) for about 10-15 minutes and the ghosted "burn" would be of the screen I left it on (which I deliberately reconfigured so that everything would be a new position).

Has anyone else experienced this? Is this a normal thing that I just have to get used to? It's not really noticeable at all in standard use.

MacBook Pro (Retina, Mid 2012), Mac OS X (10.7.4)

I just got a week 48 rMBP with LG display from Apple store in Edmonton, Canada.  After a few days I could notice minor image retention on dark grey backgrounds but it fades in less than a minute.  The image retention only seems to be apparent on a very narrow range of dark grey backgrounds.  I tried to make image retention appear on various other backgrounds without success.  Also, my screen has a minor backlight bleed on the top edge which is only noticeable in a darkened room.

As a side note, every 15 inch rMBP that I looked at at various retail stores in western Canada all had severe image retention on dark grey backgrounds if you looked for it.

Sorry to be the bearer of bad news, but my image retention was just like yours...at first. It then got worse, much worse. I could see the ghosts of previous web pages on detailed desktops (like the milky way and the earth & moon images). I'm convinced that LG can't produce a retina display that doesn't eventually develop image retention. They are defective, end of story.

The whole image retention issue was stressing me out so I decided to return my rMBP (I was within the 14 day period).  It's too bad because other than the image retention the screen and computer seemed amazing.  I just wasn't willing to gamble my time, money and sanity dealing with a hardware issue that is now so well documented.  My eyes are mourning the lack of pixels as I type this on my GF's MBA...

I wonder if the next gen of rMB will have these quality issues.

Agreed Canuck1970 ive seen alot of ppl comment saying ive got a LG screen week xx and have no issues then returned to comment again weeks later with IR starting to show . Im very doubtful that there are any decent LG screens to date its a matter of time before the IR starts to rear its ugly head ...

On another note some ppl will say well samsung screens arent perfect either ... yellowing , pixel walk , dead pixels etc ... etc ..

BUT thats only a handfull of complaints compaired to LG's huge failure retina screens .

Most of samsung screens have been faultless in every way including my own .

I was very lucky i got a samsung screen first go not even knowing about these issues till id already brought mine.

I just got my base rMBP. I'm still within the 14 day return period....I checked and it has a Samsung display and SSD. BUT...I'm still thinking of returning it. I've been all over the internet and find nothing but bad things about this laptop. It may seem weird to ask but what does the community think? I going crazy here. Thanks.

I am curious jmlivid, what other "bad things" have you read about the rMBP besides the LG display issues?

You are lucky to have gotten a Samsung display.

If the laptop is stressing you out just return it and be at peace like I did.  Life is too short to stress about a computer.  Get a different computer that won't cause you stress.

alphagob is right, if you're not happy now, you won't be later. Thats what made my decision, thats why I returned mine. I wasn't happy, and I know I'm going to keep thinking about it later down the road.

I too am curious as to what other bad issues you've heard of?

Thanks guys, the issues i'm worried about are that the computer sometimes crashes. Also the whole 1st gen problems with products like these. I really love this laptop, and would probably get a top spec MBP 15 with an updated screen. I just wish i could find some statistics showing how many actual rMBP are flawless as opposed to not.

I doubt you will find any good stats that indicate rMBP quality.  Given the sheer volume of anecdotes in this thread as well as throughout the internet it is safe to say the the rMBP has some major quality issues (especially regarding the LG screen)... which is a shame.

Similar, IR started at week 2, in mid September.  was light, but lately it has actually gotten better in the last month.  However, in your case, the light bleed is more serious.  The slight IR I have in a narrow band of dark gray that has improved with time is no problem, but I wouldn't want to work with noticable light bleed.  i see you turned it in, I think that's the smart move.  Mine, I'm very happy with.

Just an update guys.  The iMac 27" models are also exhibiting IR like the MBP retinas are.  Apple is giving the same song and dance answer it is normal.   Couple of threads have popped up on it in the last week over in the iMacs.   Money back, bye bye apple, and I'm spreading the word.

I should add this is the new 2012 late iMacs to be specific.   Looks like LG is screwing everyone across the board.

I like to think of myself as being objective when it comes to tech companies, unlike a lot of people around these forums. Looking at this rmbp I can only say that this broken computer has been a mess and handled disgracefully by apple.

I ended up buying a Samsung series 9 i7 ssd version as I couldn't wait any Longer for Apple to man up and fix the problem. This has been my first sampling of Windows 8. I honestly can't believe how bad this OS is to use, at least it is if you don't have a touch screen. I would honestly rather use Windows 3.1 than this force fed junk.

My point, part of the cost and a lot  of the experience of a PC is the OS. That money is being wasted as you're forced to take Windows 8 with a new computer. Therefore I highly recomend you WAIT for Apple's next (fixed) notebook and don't waste your money on a windows 8 machine unless you have access to a full copy of Windows 7 you don't mind putting it on. Or wait for Windows (fixed) Windows 9.

There's something seriously wrong with the mind of the guy responsible for Windows 8. A complete step backwards..if you don't have touch screen. Don't get me wrong however, Windows 7 is solid. Windows 8 should have been a seperate release for touch screens only.

Now I'm disgusted with Apple even more as I should have been learning their latest os rather than screwing around with Windows 8 junk.
