Hi, I have a very specific question about getting video directly onto an iPad:

I need to watch a lot of edits of videos for my job, and I want to be able to do this on my iPad. I mostly want to watch on the train (where there's no wifi) without using up all my 3G allowance, so streaming is out of the question. So, what I want to be able to do is to download videos to the iPad when I am at home or in the office and have wifi, and then watch them later. I can obviously do this via iTunes on my computer, but I am wondering if there's a way I can do it directly to the iPad. I am talking about files in the 250mb range, and they can be made in any codec, and sent to me over any service (wetransfer, yousendit).

Does anyone know how to do this - or have any suggestions I can try?

You'll need to use a third-party video player app on the iPad which handles multiple formats. My personal choice is CineXPlayer, but there are others.

Normally, to get videos into this app you use the iTunes File Sharing feature. However, to get the videos into this app without using iTunes, you'll need a third-party application running on your desktop computer, to copy the files into the Documents folder inside the app itself. For that I use "PhoneView": http://ecamm.com/mac/phoneview/ but again there are others such as TouchCopy.

Some third-party video player apps also let you transfer video files to them over a local WiFi network or downloaded via an internet web viewer.

So, what you want to do is certainly possible, but not as direct as you may have hoped.
