I assume your computer is a mac?
If so, then just use AFP.
In your router, map TCP port 548 to your server.
From outside (on your mac) hit command-k from the finder and enter the public IP of your server.
AFP is relatively safe to use without VPN.
If you are doing anything super sensitive, then you should look at a vpn.

Ok thanks. I am using DynDNS to update my MX record for my domain as my IP changes, so I woild like to use FTP as my IP is going to change from time to time and I would like to update my website and I have always used FTP when doing web dev, how would I connect FTP?
Nevermind I figured it out, I already had port forwarding for TCP (port 80) pointing to my server to host my website right, all I needed to do was add a mapping for FTP (port 21) to my server and now it works!
