Can someone tell me why in iTunes 11 I can't seem to rearrange songs within the "Songs" tab?

I can move and relocate songs within the Playlist tab, but the Songs tab won't allow this...

How would you have rearranged songs in iTunes 10? Answer: You couldn't. The Songs tab in 11 is just like the List View in 10. There has never been a way, as far as I can remember, to rearrange songs manually in the "List View" of the main library; you can search and sort to arrange the tracks, but you can't just grab a song and move it. That's for Playlists. Again, iTunes 11 behaves the same as 10.

The more I use iTunes 11, the more it seems like a fairly modest update -- except for the removal of my favorite view, Cover Flow. (And then there's the lack of a vertical Column Browser, and no DJ.) The Expanded Album View is great, but not a replacement for Cover Flow. Apple seems to have used smoke and mirrors to convince reviewers that iTunes 11 is a breakthrough of clean design; in fact, it's just a few simplified (and inferior) views that are set as defaults. Once the preferences that make 11 more like 10 are enabled, it's not such a big deal.

I only wish I didnt impulsively upgrade to iTunes 11. It looks like atari pong ate the old iTunes and **** out this horrible version. Why would I work so hard to get the album cover art only to have it reduced to a postage stamp in new 11 version. Ive seen excel spreadsheets with more character.

Oh and I cant forget to point out that coincidently Ive lost a ton of downloaded songs from iTunes store. All of a sudden it shows Ive only downloaded 25 songs since 2005 from the store. Plus the ever fascinating and fun loving loop of **** message "this song is not authorized" so you authorize and it still doesnt play.

I'm pretty slow so I must either be missing the joke of version 11 or somebody was asleep at the wheel with iTunes software development.

    Please update soon.

    Thanks

I'm just going with the flow on each on of these upgrades. Patience is the key. Mad, random mouse clicking everywhere just gets frustrating. I take my time and eventually all is well. The biggest plus is the purchases where filling up hard drive space in a hurry before. Now seeing they are available at any time in the iTunes cloud for me was huge. I know they are catching a lot of flack for all the changes, however I appreciate them and stay a loyal customer. When I'm stuck and email a question to iTunes support it is usually a good answer. I like the changes and kudo's to the code team for working at this.

Yes, I was able to rearrange songs within the 'Music' tab in the previous version of iTunes.

I'm not sure I understand 'sort order?'

When I select the Music icon in the Sidebar of iTunes 10.7, the songs cannot be manually rearranged; the songs can only be rearranged via sorting. That has always been the case. The iTunes Help documents and the "Take Control of iTunes 10" e-book both show manual arrangement of songs in Playlists (and only if you select the far left field for sorting), but make no mention of it when viewing the entire Music library.

    Here's what Kirk McElhearn says:

"Can’t drag your tracks? In order to manually change the order of songs in a playlist you must sort by clicking the blank column heading above the numbers. Also, Shuffle must be turned off for the playlist...."

The sort collumn with numbers pertains to Playlists. I remember being frustrated and confused by this several years ago after an iTunes update. Like you, I was convinced I could do it previously, but I was mistaken.

Thanks for the detailed response, Mark.

To your comment, I can rearrange the songs in the 'Purchased' tab and the 'Playlist' tab. And I'm almost positive I've done this in previous versions of iTunes under the 'Music' tab. I could certainly be mistaken, which is why I'm asking.

I thought it was just me! What a lousy user interface. I'm really suprised Apple would put out garbage like this. What good is your app if everybody is rolling back to the older version? Are you planning on turning into Microsoft soon?

P.S. the sync with iCloud is atrocious. Erased everything on my iphone5. Won't let me add files that weren't purchased on itunes. No drag and drop. I purchased itunes match so I could  get everything into iCloud and manage from there. Guess what? It doesn't work. So I put out the bucks and had to turn it off on my phone.

Apparently apps no longer count on itunes!  This is a lousy interface and most annoying! I have been trying to figure out how to get to the screens to move my apps around I found it once lost it and have never found it again! That was 2 hours ago thank goodness I'm retired and have nothing better to do!

No problem. We all can be mistaken. I might be mistaken right now, but I don't think so. Anything in the Sidebar with a Playlist or Smart Playlist icon can be manually rearranged after being sorted by number (blank sort field on the far left).

As to the post above about "apps no longer count," I'm sorry but I don't know what to make of that. I still have an Apps button in my Sidebar, and if the Sidebar is hidden (the default), there's still a way to get to all that stuff, including Apps, by clickinig on the dropdown button on the upper left. So there are now two different ways to get to the Apps view, one of which being the old way.

Lately everything they've been putting out is garbage! I've been a loyal Apple customer since 2003. No more, iTunes 11 is the latest abomination to come out from Apple. I can't even sync my iPad and iPhone properly anymore. This is a travesty!

Crapple has managed to recreate the Vista experience. It's turned my computer into a slow, buggy computer that doesn't play video, doesn't allow me to play any games, and randomly goes to a blackscreen.
