I wondered if you'd managed to find any solutions to your above problem... My own external hard drive (1 TB, which has worked fine for 9 months) has suddenly started telling me it can't back up and when I try to repair it in Disk Utility it says it can't unmount the disk, presumably because Time Machine is trying to use it. Any suggestions out there?

After spending hours trying to troubleshoot this I decided to give up on trying to use Time Machine wirelessly with Time Capsule, which is the method I was using. Purchased a dedicated HD and cabled it to my desktop computer and have had better success with backups.
Have said that, however, I do still get that error message occasionally. The only way to get it to go away is to shut down the system and the peripheral that TM is on, then reboot and turn on the peripheral. That solves the problem immediately.
For all the nuisance that exercise is, it still takes less time than banging my head against the wall as I try to figure out why Time Machine is so finicky.
Hope this helps!

I too have spent too long trying to get a result but sometimes, just sometimes, when I switch off, reboot and turn on the peripheral again, I get a result...doesn't last forever but at least it's backing up something for a bit.
