Thanks for this update.  My wife has Facebook after Dec 14. However, her data is nothing like your wife's explosion. I am talking may 12,000 KB in the middle of the night not 100,000 KB.

Nonetheless even my phone uses some and I am bothered by any data use when it is on wifi.

Just spoke to Verizon Tech support.  No real resolution, basically says it happens with iphone, claim they don't really see it with samsung phones.

They said per Apple's recommnendation turning off cellular data when on wifi network. Also recommended closing out of applications when not using.

Not very elegant, but a workable solution.  Not sure what I will do...

if it gets excessive, you can always do what I did.

I had made sure no apps were running in background....etc. I deleted and reinstalled all apps...etc....checked all settings.....etc....nothing worked except the full reset & erase. We are running IOS 6.0.2

I am still waiting on a call from Verizon. Called them Dec 22 and they said it would be on or after Jan 9 before they got back. They also said they cannot look at what we are using data for because of privacy laws. If I can't look at it, and they can't, who can?

Still monitoring data usage on that phone. Ok so far. The problem appears fixed. But this was a problem - a glitch, a virus (our phone has not been jailbroken), an app issue, hackers, a bug....etc.

Something not right was going on for sure, and it was costing me money. I am going to ask Verizon for a credit on going over our data allowance.

Thanks for the update Deadhead, may try your recommendation.

    Question for you...

Have you eliminated all data leakage or just gotten it to a point where you can live with it and it fits within your data plan?

    I have data leakage, of maybe a 1-2 meg a day--it varies.

I checked the data usage stats again. I would say all data leakage is stopped, and appears to average 500KB or less over a 6 hour period in locked, standby mode. That seems normal.

It compares to usage on my phone.

You might want to try doing this first -

    settings

    safari

    delete cookies

go down to advanced -> website data -> "remove all website data"

1-2 MB a day does not seem too high if apps are running in background. But 12 MB in the middle of the night is concerning.

    keep me posted

    here's some more reports...

Apple had antennagate, this will be datagate or some other media coined term to either keep iPhone in the news or allow cell carriers to recoup their subsidies in less than a week.  more than just a ripoff.

Deadhead, any updates? Is your fix still working?

Still highly variable here--leaking 1-3 megs a day on my phone.

My wife's is more volatile sometimes 1-3 megs but some days 10-12 meg while on wifi.

I am losing hope of solution.  We are on 4 gig data plan for the 2 phones, that works on to 66 meg a day per phone.  So probably can live with leakage.  However just seems wrong...

Turing off cellular is workable option but frustrating...

New to smartphones, never had one before so I am not sure what the norm is?  If we swithced to Galaxy S3 would there be zero data leakage when on wifi?

Just seems that the wifi option is a great way to control data usage and I was under the impression that when on wifi no cellular data would be used.  Is that expecting too much?  Did the older iOS versions have data leakage while on wifi?

Hey there. As of today, I have had zero data leakage. See below. Data usage dropped to almost a screeching halt. Normal like it should. Since you are also on Verizon, go to settings - general - about (and see if Carrier has "Verizon 13.3" shown). I think 13.1 or 13.2 was the wi-fi bug fix. Check that and report back.

I did not have the famous wi-fi bug. I had a whole different problem with data leakage.

I assume you have check her phone settings like having the hot spot off, iclpud update off....etc..etc...face time with cellular data turned off....etc. I assume you went through and checked all the various settings.

The icloud backup was easy and it restored the phone exactly the way it was before, even the wallpaper and contacts. You might can try that as a last resort.

    Thanks for the update.

Yes have all those things closed and Version 13.3

Below is my phone, all of those listed below are on wifi at home or work with the exception:

    34k 1/9/13 at 10:15 am

    247k 1/9/13 at 10:04 am

2.2 meg on 1/7/13 at 7:06 pm--this one I am not sure if was still at work or not.

I don't do anything with my phone other than receive email via Exchange.  I have 3 apps weather channel, starbucks, and google maps. Keep them closed all the time.

As an example the 852k at 9;18 this morning bothers me, I was at home with a wifi that works well.  I don't know what this could be, I did not receive any email at that time and everything was closed.

I have studied your data usage, and I don't know. If the phone is not in standby (on), it will use a little celluar data I have noticed even with wifi- maybe 1 KB every few seconds. That appears normal. But it should not be using much more than that with wi-fi.

I may have to go back and read your older posts but can you point to a day when the spikes started to happen? Mine was Dec 15 and was fairly consistent and got worse towards the end before I reset the phone.

    Deadhead,

The massive data loss was when we first got the phones.  Burned through our 4 gig plan in couple days using the phone very little. Got verizon to add another 4 gig but it messed the data count totals so it does not work, they say it should work when the new bill cycle begins. Downloaded 6.02 massive data loss stopped.  We can see the detailed data usage but only from the days following VZ adding data to our plan.

I am not seeing the 10 meg data leakages the last few days.  I am seeing 1-5 meg leakages. Last night I lost 1 meg at 4:57 am with nothing open and on wifi as I sleep.  I only have 3 apps.

Wife lost virtually no data last night. She get to work a little before 8:00 at 8:05 there is record of 3.6 meg.  She had not touched her phone since last night--no large emails.

I don't know how accurate VZ time stamps are but I can't connect them to large emails or activities.

In the next post I will copy recommendations from another thread that I tried but on both phones but does not seem to have any effect.

    Deadhead,

Here is what I tried from another thread....

This iOS 6 Setup Guide was posted in this forum way back in October.

It may seem a bit tedious, but beleive me, it does work...

iOS 6 introduced a number of "enhancement" which enabled you to "configure" what you want to stay in touch with instantly, and how you want your Apps to behave.

My recommendation: work thru the list, it will provide you with some insight into what you have setup to allow stuff to go on in the background

And: get into the habit of shutting down Apps when you have finshed with them...

Double click the Home button, this will show you all the Apps running in the background.

Tap and hold on one of the Apps,  then tap each one of the shaking App buttons to shut it down.

[But you know this already, just do it as a routine for a while, and see what happens]

    Enjoy...

PS: am just a User of iPhone, just lke you...

And had an issue with Cellular Data Usage, like so many others who visited this forum when they first fired up iOS 6 on their new iPhone 5, or existing 4S, and 4...

Most are now happy, issue resolved, and gone from this forum.

iOS 6: Setup to Optimise Cellular Data Usage…

Many of the iPhone 5 iOS default network Settings are intended to create best user experience and performance, by utilising available WiFi and high speed LTE and/or 4G Cellular Data networks.

If your cellular data plan is limited, less than a One GB per month, it would be wise to work through the defaults, and turn off those services that are not important to you.

Here is a guide, courtesy David and Olli, contributors to the Apple Support Community...

Network Reset: reset the network connection…

Make sure you know [or have saved] your various wifi passwords so you can quickly set them up again.

Settings, General, Reset, Reset Network Settings.

Cellular Data: turn it Off when you don't need it…

This may sound messy, but it is really no more so than turning off WiFi, or Bluetooth, when you know you will not be using it.  Maybe Apple will move this setting to the front page of Settings, as they have done with Bluetooth in iOS 6

Settings, General, Cellular, Cellular Data, Off.

iCloud Backup: Turn it Off except when you need to do a Backup to iCloud…

Otherwise iPhone will automatically do a Backup over WiFi and/or Cellular Network, while it is on Power, and sleeping.

Settings, iCloud, Storage and Backup, iCloud Backup, Off.

iCloud Documents & Data: turn off the use of the Cellular Data connection, until you need it…

Settings, iCloud, Documents & Data, Use Cellular Data, Off.

Location Services: make sure only the apps you consider critical are switched on…

These are new Settings in iOS 6.

Settings, Privacy, Location Services, and turn Off each Application that is not important to you.

Obviously you would tend to leave On Maps, Photo, Find Friends, Find My iPhone, Weather and Siri.

System Services: apparently, some of these can be demanding on Cellular Network usage...

Settings, Privacy, Location Services, and scroll down past the notes at the bottom of the list of Applications, and select System Services, and turn them all Off except Cell Network Search.

If the Maps Traffic service is important to you, turn it On, but be warned it may be a bit of a hog.

Notification Centre: work through each Application carefully, to determine what you really do need real time?

Settings, Notifications, select each Application, and turn Notification Centre, Off, if you do not need Notification in real time…

Siri: every iPhone User now understand how to use Siri…

However you should be aware that Siri support has been expanded significantly in iOS 6, to include operation of your iPhone, to send text, make appointments, find restaurants, make bookings, and handle your dictation.  The catch is that Siri services contacts the Apple Server via the network to translate your voice, do the searches, and return your results.  You can leave Siri On but be aware of using Siri, when you are only connected via Cellular Data, and low on Data Usage remaining…

Settings, General, Siri, Siri, On. by default,...

There is also a new setting included in several Applications which allow you to turn off the Cellular Data Connection while they are active...

Music: Settings, Music, Use Cellular Data, Off.

iTunes and App Store: Settings, iTunes and App Store, Use Cellular Data, Off.

Podcasts: Settings, Podcasts, Auto-Downloads, Use Cellular Data, Off.

Mail: you can set up mail to better manage Cellular Data Usage, if it suits your operation…

Settings, Mail, Contacts, Calendars, Fetch New Data, Push, Off, and set Fetch to Manually.

And select, Advanced, and for each Mail Account, Select Schedule, Manually.

And finally, here are a few more services you can probably do without, to further reduce Cellular Data usage…

Advertising: Settings, General, About, scroll down to Advertising, Limit Ad Tracking, On.

Diagnostics and Usage:  Settings, General, About, scroll down to Diagnostics & Usage, Don't Send, On.

    Some more tips…

For heavy data transmissions sessions on WiFi, switch to Airplane Mode, then switch WiFi back on again while your session is in progress.  This mode will prevent iOS 6 from switching the Cellular Data midway through the session, should WiFi stumble….

One user reported: Turn turn off all aspects of iCloud: Safari, Contacts, Documents and Data, etc.

Do not remove the iCloud account, just turn off each service, then turn them all back on again…

Another user found that the Google Account was failing to connect, using up 4 to 5 MB every time the connection failed.  Remove the Google account from iPhone, monitor for a while, then add it back again, an see if the problem is resolved.

Also check your other applications; for example, BBC News has a a share statistics switch set to On.

What a load of rubbish. I talked to a Apple tech and he said the problem was the phone thought it was using wifi but it was using 3G.

Is anyone else having this trouble on 6.0.1? The tech told me it had solved the problem but it didn't for me and a quick search of the interwebz tells me that I am not alone.

I've not had this issue following a factory reset, total reinstall and unsubscribing to iTunes Match which has some major failings for me by not synchronising or trying to synch over 3G even though it was set to only use WiFi.

I initially read that the issue was with iTunes Match and the podcast app. I don't use iTunes Match but I had been using the podcast app. Since deleting the podcast app and turning off a few other settings I have been fine. But I still want Apple to admit this balls up was their fault and to make it up to us. If I buy a car and the manufacturer ***** up something during a service they are held accountable. Why is it any different with my phone?

HAs anyone else experienced this data leakage whilst on  6.0.1?
