I waited for a month here in India to get my iphone5 delivered. The volume output and quality on any of the headphones I have tried is just to low and inferior. This is really disappointing and would like to see Apple do something on the same fast. Half the beauty of the phone was to be able to carry your music and other audios like ebooks etc with you. This volume output issue is a real big disappointment and has taken away all the charm on owning an iphone5. Would somebody from apple really respond to this. I have tried Bose and the original apple headphones which came along with the phone. On max levels the volume is just eough to hear and not enough to enjoy what you are hearing. Apple people............ help us all

Same thing here: iPhone 5, bought directly from Apple in Spain. Using Apple's earpods, volume is considerably lower than 3GS with Apple earphones. Never used other headphones other than those provided by Apple.
EU limitation turns volume so low, audio is inaudible in normal noisy situations (like a bus or subway).
In my 3GS I listened to music with a self-adjusted sound limitation, but iPhone 5 is even lower than that.
I like the quality of the sound, though. With the Earpods, sound is "rounder", with more bass (they "scream" less than previous earphones, that had way to many highs). So, with more bass added, I expected a slightly lower volume, but there's still a volume loss, as It gets soundless when you reach around 25% volume level (and that should come only at 0% volume).
Very weird. I expect a firmware update can fix this.

I too am having the "low volume" issue on my iPhone 5. However, it seems this is NOT hardware related. I can say that with certainty (in my case) becuase I took my phone back to the store for a replacement. I was given a new phone, and then after I restored all my data to the new phone it did the same exact thing - the volume throught he headphones is barely audible. At that point, I asked the tech to test out my old phone - which had just been wiped clean to see if the problem persisted. It turns out that my old phone no longer had the low volume problem. His conclusion was that there is a corrupted file on phone. So the only way to fix it is to completely start from scratch and re-install all my apps, manually configure my email accounts, etc. So, no way am I doing that. Plus, I'm not so sure that it's this problem isn't being caused by something else like an app which is throwing the whole thing off. I was hoping that today's firmware update would fix it, but it didn't. Anyway, it seems clear that this is a software issue so PLEASE FIX THIS ASAP Cheers.

This is marked as solved (using the supplied Apple EarPods), but since this is not the case for me (I'm experiencing the low volume with the EarPods), I'll open a new thread.
I hope in that way I can find a solution.

While some of us have this problem with Apple supplied headphones, the OP had volume problems with other brands of headphones, which were solved when he used the EarPods (https://discussions.apple.com/message/20023750#20023750)
That's why he marked the problems as solved. But that's not my case (and many others'), since I've only used the EarPods. That's why I've opened my own thread, because it looks like this problem is different than my problem.

I've just got an iPhone 5 64gb and put about 6gb worth of music onto it (320k) and upon putting the same in-ear headphones that I've previously used with my iPhone 4 and Nokia n96 I notice it's quite quiet so I turn it up to the max and that it's still really quiet, about 75% of what the max iPhone 4 volume was.
Seems I'm getting the same problem as people here are experiencing and I'm very disappointed to see nothing has been done to sort this as its far far to quiet for me as I like it loud and I'm starting to wonder if I made a mistake even getting the phone.
I have checked the EQ and EU settings and they're both off. If this doesn't get fixed, what's the likelyhood of a refund?
Anyone get anywhere with this problem?

I had the same problem with iphone 5 volume too low with various headphones and car aux connections. I made an appointment with Apple store and went over for help today. Actually they fixed the issue! What happened is that they backed up all my info with iCloud and JUST restored the software for my iphone 5 as it was a brand new one. Before the software was restored, the help in Apple store claimed my iphone's software definitely had issues as she noticed the speed was kind of slow. So now, both my headphone and car aux work fine. Hope this reply could help someone has the same problem.

I ve got the same problem and I don't like it at all. I can't even enjoy my music on my iPhone anymore. I would love apple to fix this problem on next update because not everyone is using apple earpods.

This didn't "fix" the problem for me. I mean, the headphones worked for a while when I first reset my iphone to its default settings, but once I restored my data from the backup, the problem was still there. Having to reset my iphone to factory defaults and then "manually" re-configue all of my settings, email, icalendars, apps, content, etc., is not a practical solution.

I think this response makes so much sense.
I am having exactly same issue; and I don't know how many times I have tried to reset the settings in my phone and infact I also tried reinstalling entire windows OS
NOTHING WORKED!! APPLE PLEASE DO SOMETHING ABOUT THIS!!

I am having the exact same issue. It's ruining my iPhone 5 experience. As soon as I downloaded the new software the volume went down so that now even on full volume it is quite low. Really annoying. Apple please can you respond to this and sort it out?
