Your problem has a mild scent of font troubles, so maybe clearing the font caches would help. You can clear the caches and perform some additional routine maintenance to clean things up with the free tool OnyX. It's available here.
Running the Automation script in OnyX with the default selections is a good place to begin.

Since you have already verified/repaired file permissions, try clearing out local/system cache files, and rebuilding the system font cache.
- Select all and move the contents of /Users/yourlogindir/Library/Caches to the Trash.
- Safe Boot Mode (rebuilds font cache, among other things)
- Re/boot the Mac while holding down the shift key until you see the grey progress bar
- Provide your login name and password -- then stop.
- Press and hold shift key again
- Select login arrow adjacent to password field
- Release shift key when you see the desktop and Finder menu
- Empty the Trash
- Try Pages in Safe Boot Mode. Does it still crash with freshly built font cache?
- Reboot normally
If you still have problems with Pages, try creating a new user account, login, and launch Pages. Does it work outside of your original login account?

Hi guys. Thanks for your help.
Unfortunately none of that worked. I emptied the Font cache but unfortunately nothing has changed. Downloaded the Onyx app, quite a nice piece of kit actually. Still no luck. I think I'll go into a mac store for some genius action.... Unless there's something else I can try.......?

Yvan Koenig, a valuable contributor to the Pages community wrote an AppleScript that tracks down and removes every file installed by the IWorks '09 DVD or direct iWork '09 downloads from the App Store. People that have run his script and subsquently reinstalled iWork '09, or direct-downloaded from the App Store have reported normal functionality.
You can obtain his AppleScript called, “uninstall iWork '09.zip from his Dropbox account. Once unzipped (double-click), there are two files: 1) The source, with the Applescript file extension, and 2) the executable AppleScript without the file extension. You may have to open the AppleScript source in the AppleScript editor and recompile it. Then double-click to run it. Should be no reason for you to know AppleScript.
