I am trying to sync an audiobook I have on both my iPod and iPad.  Can this be done?

If it's on your iPod and it was purchased from Apple then you will need to connect it to your computer and copy it to your computer's iTunes via File > Transfer Purchases (File > Devices > Transfer Purchases on iTunes 11), and you can then sync it to your iPad (it should copy over to the Books part of your computer's iTunes library). Audiobooks are currently a one-time only download from the store, so the only way to get it on other devices is by syncing.

I'm not aware of any setting for audiobooks that will do that - for ordinary books there is a setting in Settings > iBooks that will keep booksmarks in-line between your devices, but I'm not aware of a similar setting for audiobooks (there isn't anything in Settings > Music for it)

Are the audiobooks syncing over as Audiobooks or Music?

I use Audible audiobooks and the playback position syncs automatically between my iPad, iPhone with iOS 6 and iTunes 11. It works most of the time however it does fail to sync occasionally. Playback position syncing was added to iCloud with iTunes 11 and iOS 6 for audiobooks, movies and TV Shows.

The setting is in iTunes 11 Preferences/Store - Sync Playback information across devices. I don't believe there is a setting to control it in iOS.

That's probably why I wasn't aware of it - something else that I've learned today

Sounds like your audiobooks are stored in the proper location and properly set as audiobooks.

Already mentioned the setting, on the computer open iTunes Preferences/Store and ensure "Sync playback position between devices" is checked.

iCloud syncing is supposed to be automatic, but there is no way to force it or to tell whether it has happened. I find it does take some time before it happens at times. If you are playing with the devices expecting it to happen now, it probably won't. But if you stop playback on one device then start it up 15-20 minutes later on another it should sync. As I said before, it does work, but not real well yet.

You do not need to connect with iTunes for the iCloud sync to work, however if you want to ensure the playback syncs connecting to iTunes should guaranty it.
