Did you purchase the Superdrive at the same time as the iMac?
If not I don't think it will be covered under the Applecare extended warranty.
In any event you should return the superdrive, as they Aint that super, and get yourself a Tray load external DVD drive that will work better and is much cheaper then the Apple Not So Superdrive. You can buy 3 of the other makes for what the SD costs.

Yes I purchased it together on the same day/invoice. The site says that Superdrives are covered but it doesnt say if you have to put in the serial number for it anyway and I can't find anywhere to add it. why is not not that great, what problems have you had?

Ok then just SAVE that invoice an it is covered. Not sure you need to actually Register it but you can add it to your Apple List of Devices at the Apple support site. Link at the top of this page then look for Register an Apple Device. I think it is in the lower right hand box of the support page that comes up.

It is probably covered however in order to know for sure read your AppleCare agreement and if you still have some doubts then contact AppleCare and ask.
