Q: Mid 2010 Mac Pro and running Snow Leopard 10.6.4

My mid 2010 Mac Pro is unable to run KPT Bryce. I've been trying to install Snow Leopard on the machine to be able to run the program. I consider it a shame that I am unable to install 10.6.4 and above but the machine is able to run the OS...

Apple seems to force into the new that fast that software-manufacturers can't follow...

The only way seems to have a running 10.6 and boot in Terminal Mode via FireWire.

Mac Pro, OS X Mountain Lion (10.8.2)

I'm confused. What's stopping you from installing 10.6? What OS did the computer come with?

I bought the Mac Pro in 2012 and it became pre-installed with Lion.

Ok. I see. You won't be able to boot from a 10.6 retail disk (they stopped at 10.6.3) but give Apple a call, they should be able to provide you with the original 10.6.x install disks for that specific model.

Alternatively if you have access to another Mac which can run 10.6, you could install a Snow Leopard system on a 3.5" drive in an external enclosure, and then move the drive to the Mac Pro.

You can also now run 10.6 in a Parallels Desktop virtual machine.

VMware Fusion refused to create a working 10.6...

And running from Terminal mode from that other Mac would be a possibility. Installing on an external drive might be better... (TY)

I created a 10.6.7 installer by copying the install disk 10.6.3 onto a harddrive (Using Carbon Copy Cloner) and then copy the resources from the 10.6.7 Combo update with Pacifist. But the 10.6.3 installer is programmed to say "NO" to my machine...

As said, you need 10.6.5, the OEM DVD was a build version after 10.6.4 even.

Apple also sells 10.6.8 on flash drive.

upgrade to 10.6.8 on another mac and clone or sneaker-net it over.

I expect your Hardware is essentially unchanged since the 2010 model, and should run the custom 10.6.4 they provided, or 10.6.5.

The "Full Retail" 10.6.3 is only 10D575, so it will not suffice.

Finally I was saved by a MacMini running 10.6.8. I used Carbon Copy Cloner (great program!) to copy the system to my PowerMac... It was called Mini for a while ;-)
