Start by checking if you can run Snow Leopard:
Requirements for OS X 10.6 'Snow Leopard'
OS 10.6 Snow Leopard is once again available for $19.99 from the Apple Store:
and in the UK:
but nobody knows for how long it will be available.
When you have installed it, run Software Update to download and install the latest updates for Snow Leopard.

Klaus , Thanks for the suggestions, I have a boxed Family 5 pack with Snow Leopard , IWorks & ILife. I had installed Snow Leopard on the two machines here -Imac and Mini -and they were running well for over a year.
The Snow Leopard disk loads and start in the Mini but is ejected from the Imac in the same way evertime.
The Imac optical drive is okay as I can load other discs including Leopard.
It has been crashing, shutting down and doing the spinning beach ball often, even after the reinstall so maybe it is hardware issues even though Disc Ulilities and Drive Genius 3 says the HD is okay

I ran Drive Genius 3 and it said the HD was ok. I ran Disk Utility a little bit later just out of curiosityand during Disk verification I got a message saying "the HD was failing-back it up and replace the HD "
So that is what is happening. Thanks for your input. Case closed.
