Jan 14, 2013 9:50 AM in response to Christelle Gby King_Penguin,iTunes on the iPad is just the iTunes store, and iBooks is for ebooks. It should have downloaded into the Music app - when there are audiobooks on an iPad you should get an Audiobooks option under the More button at the bottom of the app.
Note that audiobooks are currently a one-time only download from the store, so you may want to connect the iPad to your computer's iTunes and do File > Transfer Purchases (File > Devices > Transfer Purchases on iTunes 11) so that you can take a backup of it - it should copy over to the Books part of your library.

Jan 29, 2014 4:29 AM in response to King_Penguinby LizzzL,Thanks! I had the same problem - downloaded 2 audiobooks from iTunes then could not find them anywhere on my iPad. Even when I contacted Apple Support directly about this problem I did not get this explanation of where to look. It is not intuitive to look for audiobooks in the Music app!
I don't have a computer so I cannot make backup copies unfortunately but I'm very relieved to have found them at last, after much frustration. Thank you again!
