I had the issue happen after restoring my software. Apple determined it was worth replacing the hardware, and with a little persusion, they overnighted me a replacement ahead of time so I didn't have to live without a phone. My new hardware hasn't had this issue.

Thanks for this! Had the same issue overnight. Thankfully, I was awake when my alarm was due to go off. Have had my phone since the beginning of October and apart from having to restore due to battery performance issue early on, it's been fine.

I got my iphone 5 yesterday and i had the same issue. Charged the iphone before going to bed and it turned on for awhile asking me to connect it to itunes, but since it was late I was planning to synch my iphone in the morning, I put it to sleep and i went to bed. When i woke up this morning my phone was dead. And the hard reset didn't work. neither recharging it or connecting it to my macbook pro. it's just dead
any of you experienced this before?

I have owned my Iphone 5 for about 3 months. Last night it was working just fine. I took a few pictures and played with the camera a bit, then set it down for the night. The cellular was turned off. The wifi was on. This morning the phone was dead and did not respond to my intuitive maneuvers. However, when I came across this post, I held the two buttons down for 10-15 seconds and voila, the apple logo came on and all appears well, so far.
Does anyone know the cause for this? I'd be most interested. ? Software vs hardward flaw?
Thanks in advance.

If you read my posts on this thread, Apple support had me wipe my phone to reimage it, supposedly eliminating software problems. When my issue happend after the wipe, they concluded it was a hardward problem and replaced my phone. I've had the replacement for about 6 weeks now with no other issues.
In my case, it would appear it was definitely a hardware issue that was resolved by replacing my hardware.

The exact same thing happened to me today. Thanks for posting the solution, saves me a trip to the Apple store. For me it took about 15 seconds to turn back on.

I had the same problem, but tried your solution x2 without success. On the third try I held down the home button at the same time. This time it came to life and showed 83%. Thanks for the tip, but I sure wish able would solve the problem. What are we supposed to do, keep a second iphone as a back up?

Upfront many thanks....Reading your Note cooled me down instantly....my iPhone 5 went down, too. I only have it for 14 days.
Anyway, before it died (fully charged) I connected an Apple VGA adapter cable to it (which was not yet plugged in at the TV)... A message came up: ...does not support the device...or similar and then went dead.
Only the sharing the comments and suggestions in this very support community saved me trip to the shop, thanks again.
By the way, that VGA adapter still works fine with my iPAD 2 and my TV.

Too... farjarkunia above...
Yes ... my iPhone 5 is dead too. Same thing and the restore in iTunes does not work. Spent over 12 hours on restore and the bar stayed in the same place - no action. So iPhone 5 is destined for the bin!!!

Thanks for sharing this. I have had the phone die and then I plugged in for charging but it reflected nothing. Having held down both buttons for 20 seconds - Solved the problem and phone reset - Now charging fine. - Saved me a trip to the apple store to buy another cable!

Thank goodness you too time to post the solution your research provided...thank you! So mine was working fine, sent a text, got home, phone dead. My heart almost stopped and then reason kicked in so I went online to search for possible answers and found your solution. It worked! What is interesting is that the posts on this issue go all the back into 2012, all having the same problem. I hope Apple is working on a 'fix' because until I know it has been addressed by Apple, it leaves me in constant fear it will happen again and the current 'fix' doesn't work.
