Im referring to the "robotic voice" problem, so called.

When Im turning off a DECT Phone close to my iPhone 5, the robotic voice problem is gone.

I dont know whether DECT Phones are known in the US?

    In Europe they are everywhere...

    Hi Friend,

iPhone 5 provides a microphone in its back to know the enviorment noise and filter it, making your calls more clear to listen.

In other words, if you are using a case to protect your iPhone 5, it maybe is disburbing that microphone, then make your calls bad voice quality.

    Check about it.

    Hope it helps.

The DECT issues is one factor that may be causing these issues. In the US, AT&T refers to them as microcells. AT&T stated that my area is surrounded with these Microcell's and as I mentioned in earlier post's, this issue does seem to happen later in the evening and when I'm home which is where the "Microcells" are. Maybe we are finally onto something, wonder if this is something that can be addressed with a software update or would this be confined to hardware?

The DECT issue (In the US, AT&T refers to them as microcells)

is something, anybody can easiliy try:

Just turn your DECT phone (home or office) off or move away for about 20 m or so and

the robotic voice problem on your iP5  is gone.

Anyone else with the same experience?

I have the same issue – what a bummer. The newest and most expensive smartphone from my carrier, yet something as elementary as quality sound quality is not something I can expect.

If it had been a problem with this particular unit – no problem – sh*t happens. But obviously it is not "just this phone". From the many hundreds of internet postings I´ve found, this has to be a hardware or software related problem, that Apple should address and fix.

I have been Apple religiuos from my first Macintosh SE, through pizzabox machines,  generations of Newtons, iPods, iPads, -Books and Pros and Phones – and I am sorry to say that I think the quality is going down. Apple has never been good at "listening to their customers", but with the exception of a few hickups, I have always felt the products have lived up to high quality standards. With the iPhone 5, there has been several signs that things have changed – and not necessarily for the better.

Can I live with a smartphone that drops calls and with a sound quality that makes conversation impossible, unless I am within 100 yards of a mast? No way.

Time to take a serious look at this, Apple – and come up with a fix.

holy sh*t this might be it! I always have the issue at work with a DECT telephone just next to me...

also had this in a specific room at my grandma's house and yes... there's a DECT telephone in there!

never really had the issue anywhere else. ****, can't belive a 20€ phone is messing with my 700€ phone.

    That's one issue.

The main issue here is a software-bug concerning noise-cancellation and this bug is 100% not influenced by a DECT phone.

Anyway i tried a Google Nexus 4 and i can tell you that the call quality is ridiculous even to an iPhone5 with software bug.

I have no idea whether a DECT phone can cause some kind of interferrence – but in my case (and most others, from what I have read) there are no other telephones anywhere near my iPhone.

The fall-outs and sound quality problem has nothing to do with any outside disturbance.

We have two other iPhones in the house – one 4 and one 4S – only the new flagship 5 has the problem.

I've been in the car, nowhere near a DECT phone, at work nowhere news a DECT phone and at home near a DECT phone.  Who knows.  I spoke with Apple support and their claimed no future updates.  I think I'm going to start turning them in every week until it works.  He's to hoping that I don't have an expensive iPod!  Good luck everyone.  Apple doesn't seem to care at this point!

Hi. I just wanted to confirm that my iP5 also have the same bad call quality (sound is cut in and out abruptly and often muffled). The symptoms are most prominent if the room is silent. I have compared the quality to an old dumbphone and both me and those I call have better sound (granted, the dumbphone use the 2G network).

As an aside, I have more problems with my current phone:

When I push the + volume button the volume sometimes goes down. This happens especially if the push is on the lower right side of the button.

This is my third iP5. First iP5 i got had a part missing/broken off in the glass/chassis connection and was sent straight back, next iP5 was swapped because of bad call quality and my last have both bad call quality and a faulty volume button.

Are these problems to be expected of modern smartphones? I start to feel a bit stupid complaining every second week on some issue. Is the technology now so "advanced" that issues with every product is to be expected?

My previous phone was a dumbphone (Nokia) from 2004. It is still working with ok call quality and just recently the buttons started to loosen.

    if it´s a software issue,

either apple is gona fix it (i guess) or the jailbreaking scene soon will.

if it´s a hardware problem, apple is f***ed

This morning the news said that apples share price felt under 500 usd because they ordered less displays for the iphone. If they would tell everybody: "hey, we shipped over xx million iphones till now and they are all crap" than only god knows what would happen to the share price.

So the normal strategy is to wait till the next generation and make it better than. Nobody will complain about the bad voice quality in an iphone 5 when the 5s´s quality is good.

Thanks apple. If this is your point of view if feel sorry for you and feel sad about what became of you.

We have four Iphones in our household, two Iphone 5's and two 4's . . . . .

Both the iphone 5's suffer from this problem at home and the 4's are fine.  It seems Apple are going backwards with their phones ???

We desperately need a resolution because I am fedup asking the caller to call me back on my landline because I can't hold a conversation with them !!

I have decided, to take a loss. I will sell my brand new iphone 5 to anyone that wants it (telling them that in my opinion there is a fault with the sound of voice calls) and go and buy a 4S. I will loose loads of money but as long as Apple refuse to accept that there is a quality issue, when all around them seem to be screaming then, I feel there is no hope. I think SimoMdot is 100% correct when he says: "Nobody will complain about the bad voice quality in an iphone 5 when the 5s´s quality is good."

waht a shame but I cannot wast any more time on this topic, talking to Apple support and reading these unhappy comments is not good for my health, my business or my marriage.

Just to add credence to the fact that there is a problem here..... I am also having voice quality problems like what is being described, 2 in particular:

    1.  I cannot use the iPhone for voice calls with my ear buds plugged in.  The call is just garbled.  Ear buds work great with music, just not with phone calls.

    2.  I am getting calls that fade in and out or break up, particularly with my wife.  It only happens when she is at work (works for Verizon Wireless) and when she is not at work the calls with her are fine so far.  I had an LG Versa (not a smart phone) prior to this phone and never had a problem talking to her at work.  I also have calls breaking up when I call certain 800 numbers.  I can barely understand anyone on these calls.

I just got this phone for Christmas.  Haven't talked to Apple or Verizon yet, but I will.

When AT&T told me about the DECT (Microcell) issue, I was like "what in the world are you talk about, there isn't one of those nearby". But apparently, people around me are using them and all over the valley which range from companies and also people who use them from their work at home offices. Any by so many of those DECT's being used, it causes a frequency disruption .

But DECT or Microcells to me shouldn't be a problem. This iPhone 5 was expensive and apparently built so high tech with only the "best" materials so this should not be a problem.

As I've mentioned in earlier posts, I've switched back to my iPhone 4S and now all is working much better. I can even use my Bluetooth Earpiece and be 10 feet away from it and works flawlessly. On the iPhone 5, I had to be holding the phone in my hand to use an ear piece (ridiculous ha). Anyhow, I am really hoping that a fix comes thorugh sometime soon cause even though will all the issues, I miss using the many other features of the phone .
