Are photos in Photostream downloaded to my hard drive or am I just seeing them in the iCloud? Is there an easy way to see what is downloaded on my computer so that I can delete the duplicates in photostream and still have room?

Thanks for your help,

Actually, I did read this and now I understand that you get 1000 photos or they are deleted within 30 days; this solves the space and duplication problem. But I still don't understand whether the photos that I see in iPhoto that are in the Photostream have been downloaded to my iMac.

To automatically have the Photo Stream photos imported into your library you must set iPhoto's Photo Stream preferences to do so:

    iP11photostreampref.PNG

When a batch is imported they will be in an event titled something like this:

    iPhoto001.jpg

Thank you.  I would prefer not to have it automatically download.  This way, I know that I eventually have to transfer my iphone photos to my Mac but my Photostream is like a temporary back-up for what I have with the advantage of being able to share photos with those who also have access to Photostream.

    Again, thanks for your answers

Automatic importing into the library will not affect the photos from being in the Photo Stream, available for sharing and as a temp backup.  It just saves you the responsibilty of remembering to upload to the library before the 30 days are up.

Quick question...so if I was to delete a photo in Photostream on my iPhone, will it delete the photo from the PHOTOSTREAM EVENT (i.e. November 2012 Photostream) that was created in iPhoto or just from Photostream. I hope that makes sense!

No.  Once the PS photo has been imported into the library deleting it from the stream does not affect the copy in the library.  Just be sure you have the iPhoto/Photo Stream preferences set to automatically import PS photos as showwn in my post above.

However, it will delete the photo from the PS on all other devices.
