My iPhone 4S volume doesn't work. It doesn't give me a sliding scale for the volume either.

iPhone 4S, iOS 6.0.1

    Do you have the mute button on? Have you checked all your settings in sounds?

    If not, try and reset the phone, hold the home and off button down until the apple symbol comes up.

    No a reset, does exactly that just resets, like a refresh, you will lose nothing!

    Well if you have checked your settings, done the reset, cleaned out the ports, then you need to do a restore from your backup in itunes, assuming you have backed up your phone recently. If that doesnt do it then you will need to make an appointment with an apple genius bar to let them check it out for you.
