I lost track of the font menu in Mountain Lion´s Keyboard Viewer. Where did the font menu go?

MacBook Pro, OS X Mountain Lion (10.8.2)

    Hi,

That's the Character Viewer turned on in System Preferences > Language and Text  > Input source tab.

Gone. It now only shows standard key outputs. The Character Palette has likewise been dumbed down to the point of uselessness.

For a character palette which can actually show you the full set of characters in one font, purchase Ultra Character Map. The link is the developer's site, which gives you nice info on what it can do. You purchase the app in the App Store.

Same page Ralph is showing, but further down the screen.

That will get it to the menu bar, but Kurt is correct. No option for fonts.

    I hope Apple

You can let them know what you want via

but this one is never going to happen.  In a fully unicode system the characters on Keyboard Viewer do not depend on the font and so the menu has no real use.

The font menu in the Keyboard Viewer had some use for those fonts and the special characters accessable thru Alt and Ctrl-Alt as well.

With Unicode the special characters accessable via option/alt and shift + option/alt are also always the same regardless of the font.

Currently I think Apple only provides 2 non-Unicode fonts where Keyboard viewer could in theory show something different: Type Embellishments and Bodoni Ornaments.

With the Greek flag showing you get all the characters for standard Greek, which are now available in a large number of fonts besides Symbol.  The default is normally Lucida Grande.
