Try contacting iTunes Support via http://www.apple.com/support/itunes/contact/ with the deatils and ask them to investigate.
I had a problem with an app which, after corresponding with the app's authors, needed deleting and reinstalling.
For some reason, iTunes wanted to charge me again (and indeed did) but repaid the sum after they had investigated what had happened and I had shown them the email exchnages leading to the redownload.
I accept that your circumstabces are different, but I found them bvery helpful.
