Are there alternative mac support groups  ?

All the Apple Experts want to keep it technical.

Are there other mac support groups that are a little less haughty ?

A short Google search didn't pop one up.

    Well.. it is a technical subject. Looking at a few of your threads you seem to have managed to get sensible answers - you've awarded 'solved' to some of them. But anyway, if you want an alternative support method you could look at this page to see whether there is a Mac User Group (meetings with actual people) you could get to:

    There are lots of forums dedicated to the use of and discussion about Apple and Macs. A Google search should reveal them.

    They want to keep it technical because that's what these forums are for, asking and answering technical questions - something they do very well indeed.

     

    I don't find ASC "haughty", I have always had helpful, courteous replies to any questions I have asked.

     

    There are other on-line support groups for Macs. If you Google a specific question it will throw up plenty. Many of those have chat areas if that's what you're after. But if you have a technical problem with an Apple product and need help I have no doubt at all that ASC is far and away the best place to come.

    I will keep looking for a chattier site.

     

    Speaking strictly for myself, I am volunteering here because I learnt a great deal here and am in turn  sharing what little knowledge I now have; however, I abhor chat rooms or social networking sites. I would not waste my time here if it wasn't a technical site.

     

    You can always start your own group on something like Facebook. I hear they have a brand new search function so members are able to give away/lose whatever small vestiges of privacy Facebook hasn't sold - it will now be revealed with a search.

     

    I have an impression that there are quite a few unanswered questions overall.

     

    Well, we are all volunteers and are spread all over the globe; if a question goes unansswered, either no one here knows the answer or it went unnoticed due to timezone differences perhaps. Posters can always contact Apple Tech Support/Genius Bar if no one here has an answer - and they are encouraged to do so if we've come to the conclusion that there is nothing we can diagnose or do to help.

    Or the question was so vague, so poorly phrased (as happens when a poster tries to ask in a language in which s/he has little command), or included so little information that no one could even understand what was being asked. That occurs from time to time.

    Exactly - and/or: the question was answered but the poster fails to respond with a "that did it" or mark it as such. so it shows as unanswered - that happens a lot as well.

    The "Answered" checkmark is part "this is the correct solution" and part "here is a reward for your assistance".  Some people fail to provide the reward for various reasons so it appears that he answer was not the solution.

    And then of course there are questions that get asked in completely the wrong forum, where they may linger for hours, sometimes days, until one of us gets them moved to the correct forum - where by now they appear so far down the list that they may get overlooked!

    Barbararose, even with all its flaws, the best site for technical questions and answers is still this one. It is populated by many long time Apple experts who are quick to point out even the slightest error in a response, and that tends to keep everyone on their best behaviour.

     

    It is not uncommon to receive competent advice faster by posting a well-written question here, than you would receive by calling AppleCare. My only suggestion is to give more credibility to a well-worded and cogent response, even if it comes across as "haughty", than one that seems to have been written by a functional illiterate. Many in the latter category pop up from time to time. These members usually go away after a while, but there are exceptions.

     

    Other sites such as MacRumors etc. tend to be characterized by rudeness, and the answers you may receive are more likely to be based on old wives tales, or outdated, incorrect, or misleading advice. ASC is by no means immune from that either, but this community does a pretty good job of policing itself.

     

    By the way, the Communities members who responded to you in this particular thread (thus far) are among ASC's best. They devote a lot of their time to help others, and ask for nothing in return.

     

    If you want to chat about things in general, or speculate on unreleased or unannounced Apple products though, we simply cannot do that here.
