Things to try:
If all else fails, reset Firefox.
Let me know how this works for you.

Thanks for the quick response.
Erased all cookies, cache and history. Still beachball.
Reset firefox. Still beachball.

Ok let's try to delete the Firefox application caches... First, quit Firefox. Then, in the Apple Menu and click the Go button, and look for Library. A list of folders will appear, look for the one that says "Caches" click it. Then you should see a folder named "Firefox" and drag it into the trash. Restart Firefox and visit Facebook.
The firefox Cache folder will be rebuilt when you re-launch Firefox.
Let me know how that works for you.
P.S. Which Firefox version your are running? The latest release is version 18.

Thanks again, but again no dice. It still hangs on Facebook. (and I am running version 18)
Every other website works perfectly fine, so hopefully this problem will fix itself the next time Facebook updates.

Do you get the same problem with Facebook in other browsers?
Is it a straight forward Facebook account or have you got any gizmos associated with it?
EDIT: Have you seen this? Other people seem to have had issues if Chat was turned on in Facebook (turning it off in another browser made Firefox OK).

Ah, that's very interesting. Thanks for the link.
Anyway, as I suspected it might, the problem fixed itself today.
Thanks all for the help.

i had this problem which was caused by the language settings. it went away after i installed the fonts for Bangla.

Me too! It's been happening to me for the past few days already, although intermittently. I always have to force quit firefox. Sometimes when I load the Facebook homepage it beachballs and one time when I left it like that for a while, it stopped hanging and a window popped out saying that it's because of an unresponsive script from "fbcdn.net"
What does this mean?

Ah, yep. It was working, but I checked it just now and it beachballed again. I guess it is an intermitant problem.
Edit: Installing Bangla did not fix it.

installing Bangla will not help u at all unless u have some Bangla content on facebook, which was causing my problem. there was something new about the fonts with apple (pls dont ask anyrhing more, this is at least what i understood), so old Bangla fonts were not working and it caused my browsers (safari, chrome, firefox) to crash whenever i openned a website which had contents in Bangla. other websites were working fine. so after i installed the new Bangla fonts for mac, it worked smoothly.
i'm just suggesting, in ur facebook page, if u have friends from different parts of the world and they are sharing contents on their native language, and if that font is not avaiable on ur mac, this may cause the crush on facebook. so if u know about any specific language, install the fonts for that one.
i hope this will help.
