Hi folks,

I've a couple of images and a movie that are queued up for preview generation, however when Aperture 3.4.3 reaches them it stops responding, I get the colour wheel, and my CPU goes into overdrive. I have to force quit Aperture.

I've been getting round this by simply holding shift to stop preview generation starting automatically when launching Aperture. But its not a solution, and I need to get it fixed.

I've removed the offending files from the Aperture Library manually and relocated them for now. Other applications seem to be able to view them without problem.

The problem is Aperture still thinks the images are present in the library (though marked as missing) and trys to generate preview still. I've tried to delete them through Aperture, but the moment I select them Aperture stops respondning again, and I have to force quit again.

I've repair the permissions for the Library, rebuilt/ repaired the database. but I still have the same problem.

My HDD has a clean bill of health, ran disk util to verify and fix permissions etc.

Any ideas how I get rid of these problem files?

Have you tried to turn off the generation of previews in the Aperture preferences - the "Previews" tab?

Disable the Sharing of previews and the generation of previews for the time being, and then try again to delete the offending images.

If that succeeds, you can enable the generation of previews again.

You can try selectig the project the problem images are in and then opent the gear icon at the top of the library inspectore and deselect Maintain Previews for Project

Or select Projects and then the gear menu will show:

    Léonie

that will only affect new projects. To prevent current projects from generating previews you need to use the gear icon while selecting the Projects or individual projects.

    Thanks for your replies Frank/Léonie

I've unticked Maintain Previews, but Aperture still is trying to generate previews, seems to be stuck in a loop. Is there anyway I can cancel this task.

By the time I get into Activity Manager Aperture has already frozen.

You said you were able to start Aperture by holding the shift key. Once you have it started and before you try to access the project with the bad images open the activity window.

Did you untick the Maintain Previews in both places (Projects and the specific project) as well as Léonie's suggested places (might as well try them all)?

It is possible that by removing the images from the library manually you have caused other problems. For future reference it is always better to use the tools in Aperture to manipulate the library.

So exactly at what point after you start Aperture by holding the shift key down does it try to generate the previews?

I can open Aperture using the Shift key, everything works fine. Preview generation does not start. This is how I've been managing to use Aperture recently.

It's when I start normally, the previews start generating within 15 secs. Then Aperture freezes.

I've unticked Maintain Previews for both Projects (top level) and the projects that the problem images reside in.

When I tried to manually remove the images, I located them within the Previews, Thumbnails and Masters folder using Spotlight and moved them to my desktop. I made a note of where they came from and have replaced them.

However the issue I'm having remains unchanged, both before removing, after removing, and replacing them. As I understand it the thumbnails and previews are generated on request, and as such are temporary files anyway.

I've read articles mentioning deleting these folders entirely to resolve other issues, but I don't want a 15 hr preview marathon only to get stuck on the same images. Might be worth a shot if I can't find another solution though.

What I have realised though, is that these images are referenced from my old iPhoto Library before I jumped on board Aperture, wonder if I can delete from iPhoto instead of Aperture? I'll report back.

Success, I launched iPhoto and found the offending images. I was able to remove them from iPhoto, then Launch Aperure to rebuild the database.

Finally error free, I've been able to add the images back in through Aperture as well.
