Hi -

I'm giving my iPad 3 to my sister and get myself a new iPad Mini. I intend to reset it so that it's back to the way it was when I first got it out of the box. Is that doable? Also, what happens to the apps I bought and paid for? Are they saved in the iCloud, and can I download them into my new iPad mini? This may sound obvious to many but I'm not that well-versed technically. Thanks.

iPad (3rd gen) Wi-Fi + Cellular, iOS 6.0.2

Technically, they aren't stored in your iCloud account.  However, if you create an iClloud backup of your iPad 3, then restore the Mini to this backup when you get it, during the restore process your apps will be redownloaded from the app store, assuming they are still available.  Transferring your data and settings from one device to another is covered here:

I would want on resetting your iPad 3 until you have successfullly restored this backup to your Mini.  That way, in case it fails you can still create another backup to restore from.  After successfully restoring it to your Mini, on your iPad 3 turn of iMessage and FaceTime and delete the iCloud account (in Settings>iCloud).  Then go to Settings>General>Reset and tap Erase All Content and Settings.  This will return it to it's original state.

The best thing to do with your photos is to import them to your computer.  However, your computer will only import camera roll photos.  If you have photo stream photos on your iPad 3 that you also need to save, first save them to the camer roll by opening the My Photo Stream album, tap Edit, tap all the photos you want to save, tap Share, then tap Save to Camera Roll.  You can then follow this guide to import them to your computer:

After you've confirmed that your photos are safely on your computer you can do the following on your iPad 3:

    1. Go to Settings>FaceTime and turn it Off (if it's on)
    2. Go to Settings>iMessage and turn it Off
    3. Go to Settings>iCloud and tap Delete Account (This only deletes if from the device, not from iCloud; your account and data will still be there when you sign in on you Mini.  If you've already signed in on your Mini it will not be effected by this.)
    4. Go to Settings>General>Reset and tap Erase All Content and Settings.

The iPad 3 should now be returned to it's original state.
