Last week I posted a couple of questions on the community about long-term movie storage.

I learned long-term storage should be on an external HD.  DVD disks deteriorate and the format will soon be dead.

Now I need a recommendation about what file format to use for long-term storage of my movies on an external HD. I hope my great grandchildren can someday view the movies.  I suspect the file format should be popular by today's standards so it has a chance of being converted to whatever file format is popular many years from now.  Do you suggest:

-  MPEG-4 (which shows up as .m4v on my movies)

-  Some other file format?  If so, which one and how should I export to this file format?  Via Quicktime?

I use an iMac with OS X 10.7.5

I use iMovie '11

Thank you,

HDP
