My brother's nano won't turn off when the play/pause button is held for any length of time.
If anyone can explain or help please reply.

I'm having the same problem and I see a lot of people are. I hope Apple reads these discussions and that they can send a fix through an updater. Mine won't turn off using play pause, and it sometimes will go to sleep when left sitting and sometimes won't. It eats up the charge so I have to recharge more frequently and it's really annoying.

Thanks, I had the same problem and fixed it using the menu and center buttons to reset it off, then it worked fine turning it off the next time with the play/pause button.

I had the same issue, I found that I had changed my setting to have the clock display in the title bar at all times. Something with that setting keeps it from shutting off with the Play/Pause button. Change the Time in Title setting to Off under the Settings, Date and Time and it should shut down now... Apple needs to fix this! If you haven't enabled that option, then I don't know what your problem may be.
