Oct 11, 2012 11:39 AM in response to Blondee2136by autospa,Well this is quite annying, below are the two ways that may help you:
1) Restart your iPhone 5 by switching it on and off for a couple of times.
2) Key up the airplane system on and off.

Oct 11, 2012 12:03 PM in response to autospaby weixiang77,I disabled LTE, and use 3G only. And the problem have not happened again in a few days.
So it must be a compatibility issue with iPhone 5 and certain LTE operators.

Oct 16, 2012 1:36 PM in response to rcurrieby slootskirico,Getting the same problem here in Edmonton, AB. Doing a full shut down then power up puts it back into the network, but I'm still worried this is going to happen at a bad time when I need to recieve a call. I don't even notice half the time when I'm home because I still recieve messages through wifi.
Apple needs to fix this crap asap, or Telus I don't care.

Oct 25, 2012 8:02 AM in response to Blondee2136by 09876,I called AT&T and the technician suggested a few things and did a reboot, but couldn't get it to work. He thought I had a defective phone and told me to swap it out at an AT&T store. Of course the AT&T store does not have an inventory of replacement phones available and was told that I would have to wait 2 weeks. But in the meantime, a technician there asked if I had signed a new service agreement contract (which I hadn't). She walked me through it, and once completed, the phone worked. I'm not sure where the contract is on the web, but that should be the first thing you have the AT&T technician help you verify.

Oct 28, 2012 2:06 PM in response to Blondee2136by JBetts2,Same problem with new iPhone 5. Never had this with my 3 gs and my husbands 4 is fine too! I can't get rid of it, try rebooting and that sometimes solves it. Is it a hardware or software issue - anyone know?

Nov 2, 2012 8:40 AM in response to Blondee2136by Jason McLeod,One of the line items from the iOS 6.0.1 patch out today, says it fixes an issue with being unable to connect to the carrier.
This may fix the problem. I'll post back if I have a signal loss issue again.

Dec 9, 2012 7:14 PM in response to Blondee2136by longwini13,I'm experiencing the same problem with my iPhone 5 on AT&T in Illinois. I'll be on Wi-Fi at home and leave to go out to the store or work. When I check my phone, it shows 4-5 bars but there is not "LTE" or "4G" icon next to the bars. I try putting the phone into airplane mode, switching of LTE in settings but the only thing that works is turning the iPhone off and then back on. It's becoming more and more of a problem and have had to do this three times today alone.
