Yes!! And nothing seems to be working, unless I'm missing some stupid little thing! I Have downloaded ITunes, and with that shows non of the options that the instructions tell you may choose a device from... seems complicated and VERY frustrating!! I would like to think too that I'm savvy with this tech stuff!

Follow these instructions:
iTunes 11: Show Sidebar and Status Bar
Then your iTunes should look like the one in the article, and you can follow the steps. After this update, you no longer need iTunes. Future updates can be done from Settings, then General, then Software Update.

I don't have the software update option on my phone, ...
That is only a feature of iOS 5 or later...
If you have iOS 4... See Here...
Connect to iTunes on the computer you usually Sync with and “ Check for Updates “...
If an Update Appears Install it... if not... you are up to date for your particular Device...

Please Note: If yours is an iPhone 3G and not an iPhone 3Gs... you can Only Update to iOS 4.2.1
