I bought and iphone 5 from eBay UK, which was unlocked to UK networks only. the iphone wasn't activated. the iphone was bought from the carphone warehouse ltd. I couldn't use it in Malta so i bought a vodaphone UK sim card and worked. but now I think its locked to vodaphone UK as I still cant insert a Maltese sim card as it will take me back to active the iphone. can anyone tell me what I have to do to use it in Malta?

iPhone 5, iOS 6

The phone is now locked to Vodafone UK. Only Vodafone UK can authorize unlocking it. Contact them and find out what their policy is and if you qualify.

What you really should have done is return the phone to Carphone warehouse for a refund and purchased an unlocked phone directly from Apple.

Then you're out of luck. You will have to work with Vodafone.

Carphone Warehouse sell iPhone 5 that will lock automatically to the carrier

whose sim is first used (now well known in UK )

Vodafone UK do offer unlocking so as provided contact them

However I suspect none of the UK carriers are yet offering unlocking for the iP5

so if you qualify you may well have to wait, how long no-one knows

Unlocking is at the Carrier's gift although often for a charge

Ok thanks. What will happen if I upgrade the software? Will it unlock to any network or no?

Not unless you've worked with Vodafone UK and they have submitted the unlock information to Apple. It will remain locked to their network until they do so.
