It can be done but it should be done by a professional. If your Dad doesn't have an AASP locally then he may be able to have a company such as OWC (www.macsales.com) do the work for him. Doing this type of installation is not for the faint of heart and should be done by someone intimately familiar with the internals of an iMac.
BTW why is an SSD necessary in the first place?

An AASP or Apple Store can't do that because this voids the warranty and Apple doesn't allow this, but you can do it yourself if you want. Just follow iFixit steps to install the hard drive, and you can buy it in OWC

The OP didn't say if it's under warranty, at best he may have a few monthly left on AppleCare assuming he bought the machine new in 2009.
