Connect the iPod to your computer and update via iTunes
A 1G iPod can go to iOS 2.2 via iTunes and iOS 3.1.3 via
A 2G to 4.2.1. Requires iTunes version 10.X. That requires a Mac with OSX 10.5.8 or later. With 1OSX 10.4.11 you can only go to iTunes 9.X which gets you as high as iOS 4.1
A 3G to 5.1.1 Requires iTunes version 10.5 or later
A 4G to 6 Requires iTunes version 10.7 or later. For a Mac, that requires a Mac with OSX 10.6.8 or later
You cannot find Software Update under the General menu unless you have iOS 5 or later. Otherwise you need to connect to iTunes to update.

Here are my options under File:
Add file to library
Add folder to library
Burn playlist to disc
Subscribe to Podcast
Create New Version
Page Set up
F.Y.I When I go into "devices" here are my options:
Sync Heidi's ipod
Transfer purchases from Heidi's ipod
Restore from back up
Also, when I plug my ipod in, no options appear, it syncs as it normally does but doesn't actually sync anything. It says "backing up" completes the remaining 3 steps, but will not sync my new purchases.
Ok, I reread the article.

3. After itunes opens, select your device when it appears in itunes under devices.
My only options under devices is:
