Q: Photos not sending through iMessage when on WiFi?

Searched for an answer for this but so far no luck - sorry if this has already been solved elsewhere.

I have an iPhone 4S running iOS6 (although I was having this issue pre-iOS6). My iPhone sends iMessages, so long as they are text, fine, delivers read receipts, everything fine when I'm on WiFi. It used to send photos on all the WiFi connections I typically use (home, campus, favorite coffee shop, etc.) but about a week prior to iOS 6 it decided it would no longer send photos via iMessage. When I want to send a photo I have to turn off my wireless, and send the photo on data. Then I turn wireless right back on and resume sending texts via iMessage. I have no issues with other WiFi functions - web browsing, etc. is unaffected.

SMS and MMS are on. My iMessaging is directly linked to my phone number, not my Apple ID, if that makes a difference?

Hoping someone can help with this, especially since it appears its not my wireless signal thats the problem as my iPhone has decided to do this over multiple different wireless signals it used to not have an issue with..

Mine has never had a battery installed. Insight tells me they no longer have the modem only models. Everything has modem and router in one unit. Service rep said new Arris is junk and they have lots of problems with them. Very limited wireless range. I can still send IMessages with pics on my smartphone hotspot wifi.

Insight replaced modem/router combo with straight modem. Now works fine. Hope this helps someone else.

You can no longer send MMS picture messages over Wifi only from IMessage/iPhone 5 ! You must use your cellular data plan to send any MMS messages per Apple 1-800-275-2273.

It can be done without using any gigabytes only through Photo Stream sending pics through ICloud to an email Adress which will provide a link for your recipient to go to the site to vie pics, video's etc and reply.

I hope this puts all the confusion to rest , as an asside also don't believe that a blue iMessage means it is a Free text and that a Green one is not !! Blue simply means its a SMS text MSG and green is an MMS. Please call Apple they will back this up 100%, all the instructions prior to Jan 16 2013 showing Mms iMessages with only wifi symbol showing is WRONG.

I have a Verizon iPhone 5 and the great and wonderful Comcast. My modem/Gateway is a TG862. When you got your replacement from Comcast, did you get only the modem or the wireless gateway? Do you suggest i get a replacement modem and then buy my own router? Or do you know if Comcast has any newer gateways that will work with iMessage with no problem?

All I can say is that I know for sure my problem was the TG862 router.  I switched to the comcast Ubee modem (modem only) and went a bought an apple extreme to use as my primary router.  I also have an apple time capsule running in bridgle mode to extend my wifi in my basement.  the minute I got rid of the Arris router everything started working perfectly (i.e. photostream.....imessaging.....netflix artwork.....etc.....etc....).  the apple extreme was worth every penny to me.....no issues since.

by the way in the past I have had very good luck with the arris modems (i.e. modem only).  I just think the TG862 has major issues and it is well documented.  I would not waste my time trying to get it to work....I did that for a long time.

IMessage was'nt what the issue was exactly, the issue at hand is whether you can send MMS messages over WIFI ONLY, The answer is NO!! You must enable your cellular data and use your gb's.

I messages works fine with my Gateway all in one, I never have problems with Comcast until it comes to billing! Lol there they suck!

I'm happy that you are up and running.....Enjoy......

yes that's true Sonny, however, for whatever reason when sending a text imessage while connected to my home wifi (comcast and the Arris TG862 wireless gateway), my imessages  would send about 90% and then freeze.  They in fact would not go through to the recipient until I left home (i.e. left my wifi).  Again that all changed when I replaced the TG862.  Additionally I had photestream problem (new pictures just would move over to photostream until I left my home).  Xbox problems...etc.....etc.  What all-in-one gateway to do you have if I might ask.....I bet it's not the Arris TG862

I cannot send messages with pics from my Ipad. I can from my iPhone and they both are using the same wifi.

Cindy when You send pics from your Iphone it's switching automatically to cellular service, your Ipad cannot send them unless you manually put it on Cellular. You do have a WiFi And Cellulat Ipad right?

I updated to iOS 6.1 yesterday. And it looks like my pic messaging issue was fixed. I was going to switch my Comcast router/modem. Looks like I don't need to now. Hope fully this update will help other w the same issue.

Tried everything myself and finally Danny718's solution of manually entering the settings worked! Thank you so much!
