Let me write here some opinion:
I still have iDVD and original optical drive on both my iMac and MBP. I have FCPX and Toast.
Now relative cheap cameras can take Full HD video. If after editing you wish to send a copy to a friend you better use a small size via YouTube, or Dropbox, or even a Full HD on USB key and send it to your friend.
iDVD does not make FullHD and for SD takes a lot of time to write it. The same does Toast and if you wish to prepare a BluRay it will take even longer for only 10 minutes on a standard DVD.
For personal use at home better to keep video files on Har Drive or USB Key and connect them to your TV set.
It is cheap and takes much less time.

Yep, whatever meets your individual needs! For my part I need DVDs to to send to relatives across the world, some having slow dial-up access to the internet.
