Yup, that's really all you need to do - it's that simple. Once the monitor is connected and showing your extended desktop, go to System Preferences - Dsplays - Arrangement, and you'll see two blue rectangles representing the monitors. Drag them into the configuration you'd like (eg, aligned left/right) and you can drag the white menu bar across into the other rectangle to make the new monitor your primary (where you see dock and menus) if you'd prefer.

Thanks Matt, just what I wanted to hear can't wait to try it out.
Sorry for the username change just changed my email address and Apple ID doesn't like it and made me change everything around.
