Thanks for the quick reply.
To be honest I don't purchase movies witht the ATV, only rent (I'm a bit old school in that regard, still prefer to buy blu-rays).
Not sure if it's relevant but I do use the ATV to stream from itunes on my macbook and it always works fine. Airplay from my ip4 also always works fine. It's only the renting of movies which i have problems with.

often times your router could be the problem, but yet again it could be a defect with the apple tv, try restarting your network and or let it sit for a few minutes unplugged. My old router did the same when streaming though iTunes on my mac but fixed once I replaced my router. Always try to keep your ATV and your routers software up to date as well. If you do not know how, simply vist your routers website and search for possible updates, remeber the community fourms are always there if you don't find anything!
(P.S. try moving the router / Apple TV closer to each other!)

It's a fairly new router and I've never had any problems - that being said I'm not really a tech head and my definition f working means that it downloads stuff fast and the interenet works. I also tried the whole turn the modem of for a few minutes thing. That 's always part of my little troubleshooting process turn everything on and off a few times and see what happens.
It doesn't seem like there is a simple solution unfortunately - i may just try and get the atv replaced and see what happens.
