With the new iTunes, when you hook up your device, it shows up as a button in the upper right-hand corner of the toolbar. If you click in the middle of the button, it will bring up the normal set of "Sync Tabs" for your device. If you click on the eject icon on the right, it will "eject" your device.
However, if you want to have the same "view" that the old iTunes showed you with the device displaying on the sidebar on the left, then click "View" on the toolbar at the top, and then click on "Show Sidebar". That will cause the old sidebar that you are used to seeing to display on the left.
Hope this helps!

are there any software incompatibilities? do I need mountain lion? do i need iOS 6.0.2?
before i upgraded iTunes all the devices worked together perfectly as is...
macbook is running 10.7.5, haven't upgraded to mountain lion yet
iphone is on 6.0.1 because i don't trust 6.0.2
itunes is most current version available
seems to be a ton of iTunes 11 problems going around and I regret upgrading now.....any way to revert back to old version?
Well, I've not tried to downgrade, but found an earlier post that has instructions on how to do it. The best way is if you use Time Machine, to restore to a backup prior to your iTunes update. Here is the link. Sounds like before you do anything you will want to make sure that you back everything up!
