Can I use an Apple keyboard on the screen, using the mouse?

    System Preferencs, Keyboard.

Show Keyboard & Character Viewer in Menu Bar

From the menu bar, select keyboard viewer.

    You are welcome.

I struggled at first because I didn't realise I had to click on the top menu bar to show the keyboard.  Interestingly, I had an online chat with an Apple expert and they told me they'd never heard of it.

Well, nobody can possibly know it all.

    Except me, of course.

I have another question now: I have grabbed a screenshot of the keyboard and dragged it into Word so my other half can make notes around it as I teach him how to use the keyboard, can I also grab a screenshot showing the upper case letters and characters?

I guess I would use caps lock in conjunction with the application Grab, which is in your Utilities folder.

If you need to use this keyboard only via the mouse, you should turn on Sticky Keys in system preferences/universal access/keyboard.  Otherwise it's not possible to make some shifted characters or option/alt characters.
