Seems to be a lot of this problem going around. It seems the built in ports are working, but not letting the plugged in devices work. Almost certainly the Mac does cannot provide enough power for the device to work.
Solution: Get a powered USB hub.
The hub has to be plugged in to the wall. Do not get one that gets its power from the Mac. It won't work.

Problem solved, thanks to you ! Simply plugged an old (1999, for my iMac DV SE, see what I mean ? ;-) powered-USB hub, and boom, keyboard & mouse back on track.
You made three persons happy : Me because it solved a technical issue that I wasn't aware of, my elder son because he'll get a 2007 refurbished Mac mini so he'll be able to do more things than with the PB G4, and my younger one because he'll get his own Mac : this good old Powerbook, which survived a 400°C fire here at home back in 2005, but that's another story.
Thanks again to all of you.
